I am planning to spend a weekend in Seould with a old mate who's here to visit for a few weeks. I don't live in Seoul so need your advice... in your opinion... what is:

1) The best nightclub in Seoul? why?

2) The best bar in Seoul? why?

P.S If you could tell me which area that is in it would be good.. Thanks Very Happy

best crub:
1) try 'arabian nights' out at incheon. that place is the best evidence of the decay of civilisation.

Excluding Korean Sunday morning variety television programs, one assumes.

I like the UN Bar because I can sit there and watch people walk by while I drink (even though I don't drink alcohol anymore)

As for nightclubs.... they're all the same pretty much in my opinion (stick a speaker to your ear and crank the volume up for 2 hours so you can't have a meaningful conversation with anyone).

hongdae and shinchon are pretty popular places. kangnam for a different scene (the people not the water holes.) it's all the same really. any university district will have what you're looking for.

I prefer Woodstock and Peoples in Shinchon.. mostly because i like the graffiti everywhere, the cheap pithers of beer, the slutty girls, the loud music, the pure raciousness of the places, and its too easy to get laid..

anywhere in HongDae is also good for similar reasons minus the cheap picthers of cheap beer and graffiti and loud music.. basically it just has the slutty girls... and easy to get laid.. but minus everything else..

reading the other posts.. UN Club in Itaewon.. i like the filipina and mongolia waitresses there.. they are nice.. they are so friendly when they give you the pitcher of beer that you order... so if that what you want.. its a great place.. but there are no slutty girls or cheap beer.. or anything else.. however.. that two minutes of talking to the friendly waitress is nice.. thats the high point.. maybe the rest is a bit of a low point.. but its all good.. i still like it there if i'm in Itaweon.. its all good.

other bars? uhmm.. outside of shinchon, hongdae, and itaewon.. they more or less feel the same.. i think there is a plce or two in kangnam.. what do i know?.. i'm just a robot going to the same places that work for me.. its all good i'm sure.. create your own pattern and stick religiously to it.. and convince the rest on it.. and we'll follow.. it works for me..

hongdae all foreigners go to Stompers,.,,
funny really you always hear about foreigners wanting to get away from other foreigners but they all gather here on saturday night...
hongdae has limited cool bars, all same ole shit!!
matmata, route66, jokerred, MI etc... all the same hodge podge, just bars really, itaewon, hollywood hate that place damn, all bars here suck!!!
if there was a cool bar I would be there every weekend..
but I just go from place to place..
66, matmata, helios, loft, seoulpub, 3alley, woodstock shinchon, etc...
what korea needs is a real CLUB!!! not these Apku wannabie clubs like S bar or tool, dives like stompers, hollywood, NB,joker red, MAN!!
where are the real clubs with real sound systems and cool people!!!
people dress up, not BOSS, julianna nightclubs!!! I mean clubs like london, new york sydney what we are used too...
I think koreans would love that too!!!
oppps im rambling now....
the party is where you make it,,, thats my motto, so all clubs are ok if your with your mates and getting drunk!

The OP asked for the best bars in Seoul......... im certain if the friend is visiting they don't want something they can find at home. All those clubs are loaded with foreigners and way gook propaganda.........

Try USA (no pun intended) club in Cheolsan...great , great place. Its expensive, but HUGE dance floor, private singing rooms, totally the best club ive been to in my 3 years.

Gecko's in Itaewon is the coolest and best bar in Seoul, and Korea for that matter. In fact it would be difficult to find a better bar anywhere in the world.

Well Stompers is living proof that, yes, a club can be too much of a meat market.

Shinchon being the one place next to Hongdae, not the place next to Jamsil right? I always get those two mixed up.

One of the better beer lists and not as outrageously over-priced as, say, Helios. Good place to go if you've gotten really really tired of saengmaekju and want to buy a few bottles of imported beer.

That said, my favorite has to be The Bar in Shinchon. The beer list is crap and the men's room has to be the one of the worst worst in korea (unlit unheated sinkless bit of walled-over alley with a urinal) but the staff's friendly, the music is pretty good by korean standards (which, I know, isn't saying much) and its pretty much the only bar I've found in Seoul where people actually seem to try to have conversations with the strangers that happen to be sitting next to them, which makes for a good atmosphere.

Gecko's is fine if someone desperately needs to transport themselves back to their home country. Where you sit in shitty, overcrowded pubs with piss-poor service. Jar-heads looking for an excuse to start a fight, fat balding men in sport-coats hitting on girls 30 years their junior and fat chicks with teased hair and low-riders with their fuba-chops spilling over the waistband. Good food though.

As to the OP..

For bars, go to Shinchon (). The area has tons of energy and tons of bars with different themes and stuff. Just bar-hop. My personal favorite is called "Mu" its like you're inside a mushroom and when you pee everyone can see you.

As for clubs.. depends on what music you like or if you just wanna score some tail. In Apkujeong there is a really cool club called Heaven, you can club-hop in Hongdae but it gets expensive at 10k per entry if you don't go on club-night. However, if you're coming in a couple weeks a new "super-club" is opening in Hongdae called "M2". Its going to be one of those multi-level joints that has different music on each floor. They're closing Matmata.

Thats also my favorite bar in all of Korea. Its the only place that I actually miss at times on a Saturday night out when not in Korea.

Just to say that the new multi-storey club opening up in Hong-Dae is called Ohoo (www.ohoo.net). There are a lot of good bars in HongDae, but they're so small that posting the names on here could mean I'm out of good places to drink at the weekends.
Look around the small sidestreets between the subway station and the nightclub areas.
