The ad, which ran statewide during the Super Bowl, features a young Asian woman riding a bike through a field of rice paddies and speaking broken English while thanking Hoekstra's opponent, Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow, for her "reckless spending."
"Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow," the woman says. "Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spenditnow."
"It is very disturbing that Mr. Hoekstra's campaign chose to use harmful negative stereotypes that intrinsically encourage anti-Asian sentiment,"the Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote group said in a statement. |

I know, right? Promoting the stereotype that Asians ride bicycles is both deceptive and hurtful. |

Yes because peasant girls riding bicycles through rice paddies is exactly what modern China, and the economics involved, is all about.
Not to mention the fact that she deliberately speaks in an unnatural Chinese accent. Her natural voice doesn't have an accent, she had to put on a pretend one.
It's like those Korean ads that showed some Russian pretending to be an American and scaring them about the evil pedo-NET...Fear-mongering and ignorance at its worst. |

I do not reaaly approve of the ad but I think that the word racist is misused in this case. Racism would showing that one race is inferior or superior by using stereotypes. This is just a stereo typeing that does not show either inferiority or superiority. In many sections of rural China a girl riding her bike through paddies would be a common sight. The actresses bad accent well that is her fault. |

Not racist. It isn't even really about China, so why should we expect a faithful representation of the manifold 1.3 billion Chinas all neatly encapsulated in a 30 second ad? |

What an awful advert. Whether it's racist or not, it's incredibly cheesy and quite obvious the girl is American (or Canadian) but pretending to speak in poor English |

Oh so now we're going to stereotype peasants?
Personally, I commend this fictional character for putting in the time and effort to learn English. She's doing much better than the average Chinese citizen in that department. Though the actress is doing a terrible job of portraying someone who's first language is Chinese.
It WAS cheesy and poorly done, but it's not racist. The candidate just did a poor job of imitating this anti-deficit commercial. |

Uhh, that comment was sarcastic.
Who are these "Average Chinese citizens"? You mean the ones that regularly finish above average in the verbal section of the SAT and swarm UC schools? |

I think the meaning of racism is lost. EVen the term yellow peril was a campaign against the lowering of wages by the influx of Chinese workers not their race. I think nationalism would be more correct.
Right the verbal section of the SAT. Where did you read that Chinese students reguraly score high marks on the verbal section of the SAT? That is not true at all. Few can pass that section of the SAT. Even with all the SAT s chools around. Dirty little secret. They admit the Chinese student even though their English is terrible, charge them an outrageous fee, then soak them for more money for English lessons at the schools ESL ACademy before they can take regular classes. ABout 40% of Chinese students admitted never take regular classes, most spend a few months in ESL classes give up and go home. It's a racket in all the
WEstern countries. |

You'd have a point except the girl was Chinese-American. She's not an average Chinese. She's a Chinese-American so saying that she's doing better is silly. |

Very true.
Additionally, the premise is a bit much, and some of his claims are just false. |

The cheap parody of a Chinese accent is offensive, regardless of whether its racist or not. |

I watched the Ad.
It is NOT racist in any way. Period.
The dialogue in the ad is not as well composed as it could have been, the attempted Chinese accent is obviously phoney - the girl has a really nice standard American sound that comes through her bad attempt at faking some kind of Chinese accent and broken English. However, an attempt to create authenticity in order to impart an air of realism and credibility is not racist. Actors put on accents all the time in rolls they are hired to play.
The ad is effective, however, and so the "race" card is being used as the only way to counter the ad.
The people who are calling this ad "racist" are racist because they are interjecting race and using it as a weapon, denigrating people of all races. |
