Not superhuman, just disciplined. It's great that you've taken the initiative to learn but if you want to really progress, you have to stop making excuses for yourself. |

Thanks for the lecture but I'm not actually making excuses for myself about anything. I was talking about giving advice to others about setting priorities. Most people would find one big academic undertaking on top of their normal job quite enough for an enjoyable life. If you and Chet can manage with two, bully for you, you are pillars of dilligence |

| Saying that learning Korean (while immersed in Korea) requires superhuman qualities is making excuses. It's fine if you're in self-denial, but advising other people based on your own learning deficiencies is wrong. |

Yes but I didn't say that did I. I said learning Korean while doing a full time job and studying for a teaching qualification required 'fairly superhuman' qualifties. And when I said Learning Korean I meant doing it properly on a course, not just going on the internet occasionally and having the odd chat with your local shop keeper. |

| You don't need to take a course to learn Korean. More excuses. |

| Excuses for what? I AM LEARNING KOREAN. What am I supposed to be making excuses for? |

| By promoting the idea that learning Korean requires "fairly superhuman" qualities and taking courses, you're building psychological props to make yourself feel better about your slow progress. |

I'm making very good progress thankyou and for the third and last time (I'm assuming you're just a bit slow and not deliberately trying to wind me up) I did not say that learning Korean requires 'fairly superhuman qualities', I said learning Korean while working full time and getting a qualification in TEFL does. Feel free to disagree with me about that if you want but I think we've pretty much done the topic to death by now. |

I make a bajillion won a month. You are all inferior and cannot compete with my pure awesomeness. I work 3 hours a month, and spend the rest of the time on the beach. Suckers. |

Nah, god of English is just trolling edwardcatflap - who coincidentally trolled me a while back over something equally inane (writing in Korean on here).

Look there's a difference between having a jolly good scrap over a subject you disagree about and being deliberately obtuse about something just to get someone exasperated. I'd like to think I wasn't doing the latter in the writing Korean debate. |

No, I had a good laugh about the Korean thing once I got the hint. |

IMHO, if you are going to work in ELT, get experience and qualifications. The ELT landscape is going to change a lot in the next ten years.
A better idea might be to get out of ELT. Everyone is chasing the same dollar. If you have a skill, or can get a skill, that very few other people have, but that Koreans need in some capacity - do that. Find a niche. We are capable of more than teaching English and running bars.
Being married makes it easier, but it is possible to do without getting married. |

Not trolling; edwardcatflap is getting worked up on his own. I'm genuinely trying to understand why he thinks learning Korean is a superhuman feat. Lots of people have done it on a busy schedule. Just look at the triple D workers here. I think he's projecting his own struggles with the language into this thread.
My advice, if you recall, was simple: learn Korean if you want to get ahead here, and it was validated by several respected long-timers. The rest is edwardcatflap back-peddling and arguing semantics. |
