A bit of a trip backwards here, but going through my old game CDs, I rediscovered the classic Unreal.
The single player experience really hasn't been the same for me since playing this game ay back in '99. I remember the high hardware specs, getting it to run using Glide on my new Riva TNT 16MB card...fun times. A great game for sure with many, many unforgettable moments. It was immersive and engrossing; feelings I honestly haven't had since. I realize I am dating myself a bit here, but this game is still pretty fantastic.
Anyhow, after visiting the Old Unreal project, my interest was renewed. These guys have been slowly re-texturing the game, bringing the graphics to a more modern look without changing the original ambiance of the game. If you enjoyed the game back in the day, then check out the links below to give the game a much fresher, crisper look. Donate if you feel it is worth it; these guys work hard for free.

The forum, for the most recent updates:

For UT '99 and Unreal:

Go to the downloads section and check out the high-end textures; most modern cards can handle it. Simply download, and paste them into the install directory, replacing the old ones. For UT, it is a bit more complicated, but instructions are there for the ambitious.
Again, these guys pay for everything themselves including bandwidth, so if you are like me and a fan of the game, send a few bucks their way. |

Indeed. I was never a big fan of the game, but it was something at the time. Too bad there isn't a movement to update the game; DNF was a washout by almost all standards.
Descent was another ground-breaker, but again, it wasn't until Descent 3 that I got really interested. I am a graphics hound and I do enjoy modern gaming, but in terms of a kind of innocent honesty to the earlier games; the atmospheres and freshness still resonate. Half Life was similar; a very unique experience. System Shock 2 was another. Doom 3, for all of its shortcomings, really did that for me as well; a very intense experience with a certain singular dedication to itself.
MDK was a big one as well.
I am a FPS guy, so my old vocabulary is a bit limited here. I think RPGs never caught me because they were more complex - or deserving of much more complexity - than PCs would allow back then. Skyrim is amazing though; the RPG is really in its element these days. |

In high school, I remember playing Doom death-match on our local YMCA's network of 386s. If you wanted to actually be any good, you had to shrink your resolution (and your screen size, no scaling) so the machine could handle the game at speed. We'd all sit around, faces inches from the monitors for hours. It was awesome, cutting edge stuff. |

god, I would probably commit several illegal acts to get a proper reboot of Descent... what a fantastic game in every aspect. |

Well, just installed the 'sikkmod' and some high-res textures onto Doom 3 and wow...like a new game. Many didn't like Doom 3, but I think it is still a great game; an evolution, not a revolution or the old-school shooter.
Wit the updates, it really looks amazing. Heck of a thing to get going though; too kme 2 days of downloading and fussing with versions, etc. Worth it though...monster closets!
My old game renewal project continues...Thief 3 is in the works.
Black Mesa, a HL1 total mod to the source engine is also under development (has been for a long time!)

Some Descent 2 goodness! Textures, etc...

This thread is far more than I could do. Page 1 and 2 have some great links.

I wish a bunch of geeks would release a complete makeover for UT2004, which is one of the best FPS games ever made. I'd love to have HD textures, DX10 (or 11), and stuff! Yes, definitely more stuff and bling bling!
I've spend countless of hours with this game (mostly ONS) over the years. The game is still installed on my HDD for casual and humiliating pawnage of n00bs! |

The textures in UT2004 are already pretty high res. You could tweak the LOD (0.5 or even -1) through the UnrealTournament.ini file; this will give the textures a sharper look. Also, many people say that running the game in OpenGL makes it look better.
The "out of hell" mod looks pretty sharp, but it is a total gameplay mod, not just graphics.

A good tweak guide for UT2004 is here (including good OpenGL settings):
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=160250
You will have to play with the .ini files and also download the tweaked OpenGL drivers. The results are certainly worth it, IMO. Like a new game. D3D really 'flattened out' the Unreal engine in these early iterations, I think.
UT3 looks pretty good, but certainly has a different feel that previous UTs. I play UT3 and UT'99 with the high-res textures. I still think the gameplay in the original is top notch. |
