| Another thing to look at is how warm you are setting it. It should be cheaper to have it it set low and you leave it on. Then you just bring it up a bit when you come home. You could turn it down before sleeping, but not off. It's not a microwave. Don't blast your room and then turn it off because heat will dissipate if cut off from a source. |
Yeah, I found that my bills were much more expensive last year, as I generally turned it either way down or entirely off when I left for work. This year I've left it at 19 whenever I'm out of the house, and generally around 23 when I'm home, and my place has been significantly more comfortable while my bills have been markedly lower. Generally speaking, the heat doesn't have to run in order to keep it above 19.

That's interesting. You're the second person who has said that. The landlord said just turn it on for 3-4 hours and then turn it off. I don't think he is 100% certain though. I'm just afraid of leaving it on at a low temp and then seeing a monster bill at the end of the month. |

| I was wondering if using a heating blanket at night would be the cheapest? I used it last night at a medium level and it actually kept me warmer than if the ondol was on before going to bed. I'm just afraid now I'll get the bill and pass out. |

What do you keep your air con at in the summer? |
Says the person named "adjuma."
I leave it at 18 when I'm not home then put it up to about 23 until it's warmish and back to about 21 as long as I'm inside.
My bill was 122,000 last month. |

Those heating mats are really cheap to run. You can barely notice it on your bill. We pay around 15,000krw for electricity and run a queen sized heating mat every night.
The single sized ones are around 100W and the queen is around 250W. |

| Heating blankets and pads aren't a good idea, IMHO. There are studies showing increased cancer risk. |

fear mongering is silly and pointless. if you are that worried about studies where there were inconclusive "chances of increased cancer risk" you might want to never leave the house due to the fact that almost anything can increase your risk of cancer.
now if that was changed to "scientifically proven to significantly transform your head into a head-crab" then that would be something to avoid. and get a crowbar. |

| Well, if I do develop cancer from my heated blanket, at least I'll die with a little more money in the bank. My electric bill this month was 50k Won less than last month. About 75k for electric. I changed my habits to use my ondol only a few times a week (if that) for about 2-3 hours each time when it was unbearably cold. Otherwise, I wore warmer clothes and used the heating blanket. No better feeling getting into a roasty warm bed as you're off to nevah nevah land! |
