I wanted to go skiing before the winters over, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good ski resort that's not too far from Seoul. I don't have a car so it would be nice to find a place that is easy to access by bus (resort shuttle bus would be ideal!). Also, we'll need a pension, resort, or motel to stay at, so it would be great of somebody has advice about that too.

Thanks for your response!

If you can afford it, I really recommend going to Japan. I went to Hakuba for Christmas/New Year and wondered how I put up with Korean skiing conditions for so long. Korean mountains don't get much natural snow, so you'll be skiing on man-made snow and, of course, ice.

That being said, these are my favorite places to ski, in order:
1. High1 (don't go there if you're a beginner, though)
2. Phoenix Park
3. Yongpyong
4. Sungwoo (this one is closest to Seoul of the four listed)

I didn't like skiing at Muju, although the area has lovely scenery.

Resorts closer to Seoul, like Jisan and Yangji, are really small but charge similar prices to the bigger, farther away resorts. Plus I've heard the crowds are absolutely awful due to their proximity to Seoul. This is why I've never been to these places.

Hey...just a quick question on the subject of resorts.

Why do you prefer High1 to YongPyong?

I haven't bee to High1 yet...but from online search...the runs were shorter and not as steep as YongPyong.
I joined YongPyung because of their Rainbow runs.

But I am certainly interested in learning more about the other resorts from those with personal experience.

I also have a membership at JiSan...your info is correct on that.
Prices are the same and gets pretty busy.
The runs are short but it is closer to my home.
My schedule now is.
3 days a week at JiSan
2 days a week at YongPyong.

Went snowboarding for the first time last year.
By no means a pro, but have the basics covered.
Not enjoying the ice...but it sure keeps me on my toes...or should I say my ass...painful learning curve. Wink

High1 has the best quality of snow. Not as much icy conditions as Yongpyong. The runs may be a little shorter at High1, but they're just as steep.

Don't go to High1 if you're a beginner, though. Their beginners runs (the lower Zeus run in particular) are always packed full of rude people trying to show off. Ski patrol doesn't do their job enforcing the rules, either. High1's advanced slopes have far fewer people, so no problem there.
