I really think the only Kpop group right now that has a decent shot at doing well in the US is 2NE1.
2NE1 has catchier music, a little bit 'edgier', less band members (I will never understand 10+ member groups), and more distinct fashion. Of all the kpop music I share with friends in the US, 2NE1 seems the most overall liked. |

The girls in 2NE1 apparently have the English skills as well. I've heard Sandara Park is fluent, and my uncle taught Park Bom at Gould Academy in Maine when she was in high school. He speaks very highly of her. |

While I've heard that as well, her interviews shows that her English is quite poor. CL has a massive accent, but she does an excellent job of masking it on her songs. Dara can't do that. |

To be fair she did well in Japan and East Asia generally, as have most of the Hallyu brigade.
But the west is just a different matter. I think its fair to say we get what they're about.. but we've already moved on from it decades ago. |

What do you mean?
In the 70s we had Disco
In the 80s we had New Kids on the Block
In the 90s we had NSync
In the 2000s we have Lady Gaga and Kesha and all that (I don't even know whats going there)
Sure moving on.
Frankly I love the occasional disco song and the 80s-90s stuff wasn't too bad either. The more recent stuff is a bit over the top, but its still got a decent beat.
People take music wayyy too seriously these days, |

I never really knew how CL was in English, but in the MTV awards interview I found her much more articulate then I thought.

It's hard to hate a single Kpop group when the countries whole music culture is garbage. They've copied the worst of western music. How much more enjoyable life would be if they had created an industry of Chemical Romance, Killers, Pearl Jam, for example, instead of Britney Spears and Pussycat Dolls. The best way to enjoy Kpop is with the video on and the sound off. |

I don't think Korean language is very conducive to "rock" music. |

You don't get why they put English lyrics in K-pop do you? A huge part of it is to make the singers appear more international in the eyes of the local fans. So, you can imagine that releasing an album of English songs in the US is the ultimate sign of success, regardless of whether it bombs or not. |
no we get it.
cross over stars, like glory estafan, Ricky martin, Marc Anthony, etc..
they sing in Spanish, and make it big on the spanish charts, and win latin grammys etc.. there is a HUGE hispanic community in the united states for them to grow. even enrique iglesias who is American uses the latin charts and sings in spanish.
now his father julio yes, he made a very good living singing in English.
they are proud of their spanish heritage, but they first market to Latinos and sing as latinos,
then they become latin Americans, as all of them moved to the states in their teens or were born there.
which singers in America are total foreigners and doing very well singing in English as a second language and are still saying they are foreigners? |

Newsflash: Not everyone around the world gives two craps about rock.
For one thing it tends to be incredibly depressing/angry. Also, often it doesn't feature the greatest vocalists in the world or songs that are easily sung in, I don't know, a kareoke room. And often these days it lacks groove. Also, people like to dance.
Why is pop music popular in Korea? Everytime I hear this I wonder how a bunch of allegedly great critical thinkers can't put look at the social event called "noraebang", and put two and two together. Probably because they're big on the critical, less so on the thinking.
Look I love my rock music too, but I'm always amused by people who like rock and don't get why other people don't. |

I remember back in middle school I was a big music snob. I threw around words like "poser", "trendy", and "selling out". I listened to grunge music exclusively and discounted all other music as crap.
And then I matured and grew up. I don't like Pop music, but I can appreciate musical talent.

That is a clip of Park Bom of 2NE1 singing with nothing but a guitar. I can appreciate that. She's a great singer. |

Good gawd that poor woman has so much plastic and silicon in her face!
Fake chin, fake lips, fake everything, covered in an inch of make-up!
Sad Korea feels it's so important to hide a singer's true looks. |

I just threw out a couple groups as example, I wasn't intending to imply it was all about rock music.
Blue's, Jazz, R&B, Country, I appreciate talent in all these areas. Hell, even Celine Dion has serious chops. When I'm bad mouthing Kpop, and yes it is total garbage, I refer to the barbie doll girls and boys, counting the steps in their head while they lipsync together. Girls Generation are poster children for this.
You think rock music is all depressing and angry? Can't argue with that logic. Or rather it's to idiotic to argue with.
I never even came close to questioning WHY it is popular, so although your noribang defence is great, I think you are arguing with the voices in your head. And who are all these self proclaimed great critical thinkers you are talking about? Anyone expressing an opinion?
Opinion: "apples are more delicious than oranges". Now you rebute with I'm crazy because pizza has more toppings than hamburgers. GO! |
