My degree will not be conferred until mid-June, and I hear applications for EPIK start up in April. Is this going to be a problem? Can I start looking for non-EPIK jobs if I haven't received my degree yet? Thanks everyone.

1) Yes. NOTHING can happen till you have that parchment in your hands and have an apostille on a copy of it. (Same is true of the CBC).

2) Yes, you can start looking but you will largely be ignored by everyone except someplace that is so desperate (and bad) that they can't get anyone else - see #1.

I see. Will public schools be looking for people in June? Or will I have to go the Hagwon route?

Depends on what country you are coming from.

Getting your parchment in June is not a big deal if you are Canadian and live in Vancouver (you can get it K-consulate certified in a day).

It may be a BIG issue if you are American and need to send it by mail to DC to get an apostille (can take a couple of months).

There are also any number of options inbetween (American and State apostille, UK and a quick trip to the FCO, etc).

Your CBC may also be an issue since it has a shelf life of 6 months from date of issue and also needs an apostille but may take months to get.

OP: When do you expect to have your actual diploma (not the completed transcripts and not a registrar's letter verifying graduation) in hand? I graduated in June 2004 and the diploma itself was delivered in November 2004. As ttompatz said, you're not going to have any luck until you have that.

For Americans gettting their CBC and having it apostilled is a time-consuming process, especially if you send it by mail. For both the FBI office that conducts the background check and the State Department office that issues the apostille, there is a five week delay in the mail room (for irradiation treatment of all mail). That means at least ten weeks of processing before you can expect to have it back. The alternative is to pay a service to hand-deliver the application to the FBI and another service to hand-deliver the completed background check to the State Department.

I found that it takes 3 months to actually receive the diploma, so I should get it mid-September. So I guess I can't start looking for jobs until then. Will it be difficult to find a job during that part of the year? I guess I'll wait on the CBC for a bit since it only lasts for 6 months.

Get the parchment in Sept means starting work in Oct/Nov.

Not hard to find hagwan work. Not easy to find PS jobs with ASAP starts. (School term effectively ends in Dec.)

The first EPIK round you will be ready for will be applying from Oct - Dec and the job starting in mid Feb. following.

Apply for your CBC in mid July.
It will give you lots of time to get up to speed on the working of the hagwan industry in Korea.

Also remember its YOUR STATE's Sec of State (or should I say the state where your degree is from) that will do the apostille for your diploma, those take considerably less time than the US State Dept. which must apostille FBI checks.

Big difference between the two
