Wondered if anyone else had had this flu like hacking cough thing thats going around at the moment? Its totally laid me out this past couple of weeks, never felt so bad for years. A lot students at my school had it last month (which is of course where I picked it up from), but none of 'em seemed to get it as extreme as me. First week or so I just felt miserable and lost almost all appetite, occasional coughing but not bad. Second week the hacking cough started up real bad, so bad that when I coughed the pain went through my whole body. Certain times of the day were worse like going to bed at night and coming inside from being outside & vice versa - these would start off a coughing fit that would last 30 mins or more - afterwards I'd feel totally destroyed. Also in the 2nd week no appetite whatsoever (great for losing weight though - lol) and throwing up on at least 4 or 5 occasions. At this point I was craving orange juice (the real stuff, not Fanta) almost continuously. And for two or three days running I had very bad heart palpatations, at certain points I thought I was going to have a heart attack or something! As well as all this a total lack of energy and frequent feelings of nausea.
This week I've started to come right albeit slowly, thanks to doctors medications and plenty of sleep. The palpatations are gone and the hacking coughing fits are far less frequent. The appetite is slowing coming back too - had a real craving for spaghetti today! Still feeling relatively weak though and a bit light-headed sometimes. My advice to you if u start feeling like this is get to the doctor pronto! I waited round for 4 or 5 days hoping the whole thing would go away before I decided to go to an MD. The pains just not worth it!! |

It's called the flu.
Haven't had that recently, but last spring, about March or April I got exactly what you're talking about. Coughing that wouldn't stop, whole body hurt, no appetite. I was coughing so bad that I even coughed up a little blood, too. It was horribly unpleasant.
This week, the TA's at my school have been getting sick. Nothing serious, (at least not outwardly) but today I woke up and had a fever. Ended up sleeping all day, just now starting to feel better.
Anyway, just that time of year. People = wash your hands, cover your mouth, drink lots of fluids, get lots of sleep. I've been there before, and don't want to be there again! Hope you feel better soon. |

I had that for three weeks in December and January. I think it was bacterial, but antibiotics didn't do a thing, though. So, I began rinsing my sinuses with saline 4 times a day. That did the trick. I was feeling better the next day and I was back to my normal self after a couple of days. |

Thats interesting about the saline. Where can u pick it up? I'm guessing at a drugstore. I'll try anything to ease the pain of whatever it is I have.
I'm still suffering after about two & a half weeks as I write this actually. Hardest thing to cope with are dry hacking coughing attacks which are still accuring periodically. Had an attack about an hour ago for about ten minutes. Thought my bloody skull was going to split. Havnt felt this MISERABLE for years.
Thanks for your thoughts and advice nathan. |

Just make your own. Boil a cup of water and put about a third of a teaspoon of salt in it. When it's at room temperature, pour it into a plastic squeeze bottle and use as needed.
Here's a slideshow explaining how to do it:

Or do it when it's still hot if you're really stuffed up. Can clear things out and get things moving. Nasty but effective... |

Sure. I meant to say to wait until it cools down. You wouldn't want to scald yourself. |
