And spared themselves the humiliation

http://www.ajc.com/news/north-fulton/pastor-wife-charged-after-1324043.html?cxtype=rss_news_81963

Quote:
Members of an Alpharetta congregation say an associate pastor and his wife may not have understood the consequences of leaving their young children at home alone while they attended a worship service at church, Channel 2 Action News reports.

Jongkyu Kim, 37, the associate pastor of Sae Han Presbyterian Church on Kimball Bridge Road, and his wife, Myunghwa Jeong, 35, were arrested after police found their 2-year-old son wandering outside by himself, according to a police report.

They initially were charged with felony cruelty to children and misdemeanor reckless conduct, but the felony charges later were dropped, Channel 2 reported. Church members told Channel 2 that the couple were good parents who may not have understood the implications of leaving youngsters at home alone because of a cultural barrier.

Cultural, my @$$. There is a better word, and that is neglect.

Wow thats dumb and they deserve what happened to them!

Reminded me of the moron who took his kid with him to the Casino and left him in the car in the winter while he went and gambled. He covered the baby with a blanket and promptly forgot about him as he went on a gambling binge.

I wasn't that young (maybe 6 or 7), but I remember my grandfather would regularly take me with him to the local bookmakers and leave me outside the door with a couple of comics and some snacks, while he would go and bet on the horses. That kind of thing would be seen as abuse these days.

That happened quite a lot in Australia and now the casinos have measures in place to monitor for kids left in the car.

A couple of the kids died.

99% of the time the parents were Asian.

There is a huge difference between 6 years old and 2.

He would have just handed out a pack of crisps to all the kids and cigarettes for those older than 11. Things were different back then...

Hence the opening clause. To be honest, I was just having a little trip down memory lane lol.

Hehe heh, I know. My old man used to come home from the bookies / poker / cribage either flush - in which case he would fish out massive handfulls of change out of his pocket and do a scrambles, or if he'd lost be in a bad mood smoking and drinking on the sofa...

I was allowed to watch the poker games as long as I didn't tell them what each others cards were. First time I ever lost money gambling, I was 7 yrs old. Dad had a mini casino and I said I wanted to play too. So he let me bet my 50p pocket money on red or black and I lost it.

I thought it was a joke and I'd get it back but he never gave it back despite my bursting out crying and screaming that I didn't really mean it.

"That'll teach you to gamble son. Not nice is it?"

It did actually teach me to gamble.

1% off actually. Amongst the kids that died (3 cases) they were all Asian.

I asked my university students how many of them were left home alone as early as 2 or 3 western age, and I was shocked at how many had been.

It's easy to judge people for leaving their kids home alone, but the circumstances need to be taken into consideration. A single mother without access to free childcare, leaving her young kids alone so she can put food on the table is not the same as a couple of gambling addicts shirking their responsibilities.
