What dating "experts" are those? The same ones who suggest creeping a girl out by approaching her as she's busy looking for books or having coffee with a friend?
If a moderately attractive girl approached me in a bookstore with the obvious intention of flirting, I would probably be a bit put off by the advance, whereas if the same girl came up to me while I'm playing darts and having a few beers while casually chatting with some buddies in a bar with Guns N' Roses playing in the background, I'd be much more receptive. What makes you think most girls would be different? |
It's more YOU as the guy approach the woman in a bookstore and such, and I've read quite a few materials on dating on the Web. Shoot, I've heard supermarkets, toy stores and the like.
Not saying you cannot get numbers or score in a bar or club, but even the most experienced playas can have low shooting percentages there. |

The real world doesn't always work like Two and a Half Men, where Charlie makes some witty and suggestive comment in the produce section that makes the nearest bombshell immediately want to get into his pants.
For better or worse, in our culture it is generally considered a bit weird and creepy to approach someone in a bookstore, subway, or supermarket with the intention of hitting on them (or even just for socializing). Unless you're super funny/cool or an amazingly attractive woman, I don't want random people intruding on my personal activities. Imagine how annoying that would be if people came up to you every five minutes just to chat. I feel you should respect someone's privacy and right to not be bothered by whatever clever pick-up line you spent the last five minutes conjuring. In my opinion, it's about as creepy as that guy walking around shameslessly trying to spit game to every bird in the club.
Clubs/bars are different from the aforementioned places as they're made (primarily) to give people a chance to socialize. There are plenty of other venues as well where it's easy to socialize and meet people (sports/activity clubs, church, etc.), but for people in their 20's and 30's, going to bars is a great way to meet new people in a relaxed environment. That's why people are there (well, maybe some people just like to drink or play pool, but there are other places just for that). I don't think I'm the only one who has made lots of new friends, whether through introductions or just talking to random people, at various bars and clubs in Seoul. I actually owe my current job to talking to some people at the table next to me at a bar in Itaewon. In fact I met my ex at the same bar, as it turned out the groups we were with then had some mutual friends who showed up. |

Do good looking foreign women really stay in Asia longer than their modeling show lasts? Are you looking for a relationship or a one night stand? If you want a real relationship with a foreigner, I would go to another part of the world. Korean women and some Chinese women are the best you will get here in Asia. If you can't stand that, then there is no hope.
Just giving you a heads up so you don't waste your time over here. |
I can't believe we got to the bottom of page one before someone slagged off foreign women.
Anyway, OP, I found that you're more likely to meet western women in Hongdae rather than Itaewon. |

| I would suggest facebook. Join every group that relates to foreigners in Korea that interests you. Stay away from the people with Korean names. Those who write their English names in Hangul are also probably best avoided. Go out to some of the events that these groups host. |

Adventure Korea might be a good place to meet foreign birds if they're still in operation.
I'm in with the OP in regards to Korean girls.
In my regards, the older I've gotten, the less pickings there are. I'm in my 40's which has a lot to do with it and been here since the end of 2002 and still didn't meet 'the one'.
These days I'm contemplating a move to another more lax Asian country culturewise.

You can also try seoul.craigslist.co.kr I am also in my 40s and a gyopo, but I met a wonderful American girl via the site. We didn't get involved romantically but she and I remain good friends despite her return to the U.S.
Don't give up on Western women, hehehe. |

I'll take a Filipina over them anytime! Language and family just easier to adjust to. |

| If a moderately attractive woman approached me in a bookstore, everything would depend on what books she is interested in. If she is checking out/carrying anything by Bukowski, T.C. Boyle, Don Delillo, Edward Abbey, Henry Miller, Harry Crews, Larry Brown, then it's on. On the other hand, if she is carrying the latest Harry Potter or something, I am out of there! |

because that would obviously mean you would be a mental giant compared to her and that she wasn't buying it for her niece or even having a nice mindless read. do you also not try new foods because they look a little too red or maybe you don't listen to new music because the album cover isn't to your liking? ugh.
single guys of the world, do not take this man's words as things you should also do, lest ye be single and lonely for the rest of your lives. |

I'm sure his statement was tongue-in-cheek.
Even if not, there's no need to get defensive because you read Harry Potter. He is just giving his tastes in women.
Yes, I would avoid music if the album cover was awful (e.g. a mural of Harry Potter). I would avoid food if it was all red (like some Korean dishes). And I, too, would avoid a woman carrying Harry Potter. Regardless of the reason for her purchase, I would most likely dislike her. These are personal preferences and one shouldn't need to apologize for knowing what attracts them. He never said that others should feel the same. |

while i'm sure his statement was made with a "humorous" tone , it was definitely based off his reality. try and tell me that's not true.
as for harry potter, i haven't read any and don't care to, but i'm not about to judge anyone for doing so.
have fun in your sheltered world of no red foods, judging people who are holding a harry potter book and only listening to music with safe covers.
all i know is, if she's good looking and wants to go to dinner, but is holding a copy of "everybody poops" well, let's just say "mama didn't raise no fool" and that it'd be a date. bon appetit. |
