OK - first of all, it is irresponsible to leave your kids home alone. But, one thing I hate is finger pointing neighbours who like to publicly villify the parent involved, and shed crocodile tears over the 'kiddy' for the benefit of the media. Let's get real; leaving your kid at home is risky, but what kind of neighbour are you if you are willing to go on telly (or appear in the newspaper) and bad mouth the offending parent, but you are not willing to watch your neighbour's kid for an hour or so?
I know that being a bad neighbour is less heinous than being a bad parent, but this is a pet peeve of mine. I'm old, but my mum used to leave us at home (as pre-schoolers) while she went to the shops. There were dire warnings about playing with matches, but really it was no different from us being out on the street - alone and unsupervised, which we often were - probably safer!

That's a fair point.
I'm only 24 but the amount of kids you see playing in the street now compared to when I was a kid is startling. I remember being able to look down the length of the street and see groups of kids all the way down playing football. Now I wouldn't see any. They're too busy sitting in the house getting fat |
