Hmmm, why? Is this face-saving? An aggressive way to prevent a possible spread of HIV to Korea or another example of the paternalistic control South Korean women live under?

Being a prostitute in Korea = no punishment

Being a prostitute abroad = jail

In this article in the NY Times on the Korean government's role in encouraging poor Korean women to offer sex services to American soldiers so the US military wouldn't leave -- a former prostitute says the Korean government was her "pimp"

if you took every politician, lawyer, policeman out of Korea who has slept with the prostitute or drank in a room saloon there wouldn't be any of them left.

South Korea is understood to be pursuing reprisals against its nationals who willingly participate in the industry here, including a year in jail and compulsory return to Korea.

Now THAT's what I call a harsh punishment Laughing

So true.

The irony here is that prostitution is legal in Sydney, but illegal in Korea. Why penalize a willing participant of a legal transaction in a foreign country when they turn a blind eye to the same (illegal) activity in their own country??

More serious offences, including sex trafficking, can lead to 10 years in jail.

This is fair enough! These are the people who need to be hunted down.

Perhaps the Korean government is upset about Korean girls sleeping with foreigners overseas.

Or maybe the Korean government wants to lower what Korean prostitutes charge by getting them to return to Korea and increasing the domestic supply.

Maybe both.

Cock-blocking on a whole new level...

Wow what a crock of shit. How is this going to be enforced though? Are they going to send Korean police to Australia? Are they going to arrest Koreans who do drugs in Amsterdam? Should the US punish Americans under 21 who drink legally in Korea?

Do other countries do this kind of thing too? I never hear about the RCMP getting involved in punishing Canadians when they commit crimes abroad (for example).
