I am allowed two pieces of checked luggage PLUS a carry on and a laptop bag right?
I'm struggling to fit everything into one large suitcase along with expecting that I'll be buying things over there to add on to it. |

On the international leg, YES. 2 bags@23kg + 1 carry-on @10kg + a laptop.
IF you need to use a domestic carrier in your home country then unsure.
On the flip side of the coin. If you are packing that much stuff you are waaaayyy overloaded. You'll have more stuff than room to live in.
Seriously, the rest of the planet gets by on 20kg + 10kg carry-on + laptop.
Time to trim the load.

Hi- you might be better off with two lighter checkins than one extra heavy checkin. If it goes over the single piece weight limit, you'll get dinged for USD 100 (in America). I got dinged last fall. |

And how do you propose to get all of that PLUS everything you acquire over here home again?
You'll be on here next year asking for economical ways of shipping stuff back to the states (there aren't any BTW).
I don't care how much of a fashionista you think you are you don't need that much.

The last time I went back to NY, I took two lightly packed suitcases with me. Two changes of clothes and some presents for my family and friends. If you plan on clothes shopping, there is no need to bring more than two outfits. I wore all of my new clothes while I was there. That way I was able to fit a year's worth of clothes and other things in two suitcases and a carry on. |

I maxed out my luggage, had to pay an extra 100, and still wish I had brought more. I didn't know I should have brought my own sheets and a long supply of toothpaste.
Some of us can't buy or don't care for the clothes in Korea.
And not all of us live in Seoul or Busan.
Also, living on very little luggage evidently puts one in a rather bad mood from the looks of some posts on this thread. I'd rather bring lots of my comfort items and try to treat other people well. |

Two bags used to be enough when the weight allowance was 40kg like 5 years ago. Now it's half and sometimes only one checked bag is allowed. I guess it's the price we pay for having prices less than what was paid in the 1980's. |

Back in the 80's the baggage allowance was up to 2 bags with a combined weight of just 44lbs.
It wasn't until the expansion and deregulation occurred that the limits (to/from North America jumped and now they are paying for it).
The rest of the planet never changed and is still on 44lbs (20kg) + 5-7kg carry-on for full service airlines and much less on the discount carriers.

On Air China to the US, I was allowed 2 bags, each weighing no more than 23 kg. They have the same limits for flights to Australia too. Japan Airlines allows up to 23kg per piece (2 max) anywhere in the world, one of the very few airlines that have this limit to anywhere other than the Americas. |

Don't know about the early 80's but I do know the late 80's that it was 2 x 80lbs on flights to Asia from North America.
Anyways, 1 bag is not enough space, or weight, to take for a one year assignment. For a 2 week trip it probably is more than enough, but for 1+ years, no way. |

I brought a large Mec canvas bag (not a duffel, think hockey bag) and then a large suitcase. I really wish that I'd packed less as I wore hardly any of the clothes I'd brought with me. Next time I plan on having 5 or 7 outfits and saving the room for the things I really wanted to have that I hadn't brought. Make sure you're pretty clear on the expected dress code before packing. I did kindie and was a human jungle gym.....I didn't really end up needing all the dress pants and office wear I'd brought with me.
Next time I will bring more food items, shoes, toothpaste, GOOD shampoo/cond in litres, a duvet cover and possibly my own duvet if there was room, baking supplies, workout clothes and more outerwear. I could have gotten away with less underwear and makeup. When I finally cleared out my closets at the end it was incredible how much crap I'd accumulated. I should also note that I didn't have to ship anything home and managed to still bring it all home with me, so if you do decide to bring everything you're talking about you should still be okay. |

Travel light, travel light, travel light. There is no need for anyone to carry a bunch of stuff with them when they travel.
My last trip to Indonesia I carried exactly 4 1/2kg for a 12 day trip. One small carry-on for clothing, shaving kit, snorkeling gear and a book. Another smaller carry-on with a book, writing pad and pen and dominoes.
When I came to Korea back in 1998 I had one large check-in bag at 15kg and small carry on with a couple of books and shaving kit in it.
Now, I have a family of 4 (myself, wife and twin 2 1/2 year olds). When-ever we travel, if possible, we mail the vast bulk of our stuff to our final destination. It does cost for shipping but it sure saves on the trouble of keeping up with kids, family, ticketing, immigration, customs, etc while at the airport. |

Really?
Pretty much everyone from Ireland and the UK ended up taking just one bag for their year in Korea, myself included.
It was a hassle but manageable.
It's certainly possible. |
