Hi all. If anyone could help me out with any/all of this I'd really appreciate it..
For a friend...
Scenario: I left Korea a few months ago (completed contract) and turned in my ARC. I am now back living in the US, waiting for grad school which begins in September. I'd like to go back to Korea for 5 months to save some money before starting my course. My old boss has offered me my old job and apartment for the 5 months. Now it's down to me.
Questions;
Do I have any chance of getting an FBI check between now and late march?
If not then I'll have to work on a tourist visa. Does a tourist visa for Americans last 3 months?
To renew it will I have to go to Japan?
I realize that working on a tourist visa isn't exactly legal..
Are there any different, legal options/routes available to me?
Is there any visa I can get?
Thanks in advance!! |

Any visa that allows you to teach requires the CBC.
Not sure about getting your FBI check and an apostille on it in less than 6 weeks.
Yes, tourist stamps for Americans last for 90 days (not 3 months).
Yes, you need to leave and return to start another 90 days (Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, etc. - whichever offers the cheapest flight).
There is no legal route that doesn't require an FBI check.
(the H1 - working holiday visa is not available to Americans - reciprocal treatment - America doesn't allow them for other countries - just in case someone mentions that they did it that way (also not legal to teach on an H1))

If you've already been through the process, you know how long it takes. You can get it done quicker by going to West Virginia FBI HQ, turning in your fingerprints, and waiting for your letter a few hours. Then take the letter to Washington D.C. to get it apostilled. Your school should be able to apostille your transcripts in less than 2 weeks. That's the only way to do it legally.
Otherwise, just come here on a tourist visa, work for 90 days, leave the country to do a visa run to stay the other 60 days. Your boss might pay for that. Again, all of that is illegal and you won't get pension or insurance while you are here. (Watch out for mopeds, cars, buses, and crazy old ladies) |
