Saw this in the news today...

Don't have time for a full translation, but...
The funniest thing is definitely the picture. Article says these guys were distributing cannabis, picture is of a white powder substance.
Those arrested include 13 hagwon teachers, a hip-hop singer, and an American university professor. Apaprently they were distributing cannabis both smuggled from Canada, and some grown in Korea.
Perhaps most concerning is a quoute from the police at the very end. They say the drug tests for foreign teachers are ineffective because they are tested once when they arrive in Korea and then are not tested again.
What's next? Monthly drug tests for E-2 holders? |

its amazing what a bag of talcum powder fetches these days.
Seriously though anyone dealing cannabis here is a first class idiot.
Once again...another result of immi getting rid of all the old korea hands and importing a billion inexperienced newbies fresh out the halls of residence. |

so I guess this policeman thinks Every foreign teacher in Korea is a drug smoking criminal? wow generalize much!?
Also I think the rule of Smoking cannabis shouldn't be illegal.
growing, importing, distribution yes,
but urine tests. come on... HELL NO.
teachers who are raided and caught with nothing should be let go, hair samples and urine samples should not be used to punish someone.
the Korean police are catching teachers who have returned on vacation, or have smoked once at a party or something and then arresting them or demanding they dob someone in so they can arrest someone else.
This is all for promotion for the policeman!

anyway with laws like these and power the police have and the no rights we have.

This just happens from time to time...too bad for these guys.
Then again, anyone dumb enough to import and sell drugs in a country with such draconian drug laws has to be a bit of an idiot....

Sure glad I'm not in Korea. I can see mandatory monthly drug tests in the offing.
I don't do drugs and I don't feel sorry for anyone foolish enough to sell them in Korea,
but I do feel sorry for the average ESLer who will have to bear the brunt of the knee-jerk reaction that's sure to come. |

Ah Korean media. I can't tell if it's laziness or stupidity. I'm guessing they naver searched for a random picture of drugs and used the first one they saw. Also note the title of the article. "Again" Like this happens sooo often. |

Annual drug tests are mandatory in Gyeonggi-do.
I just dropped 120K this week to prove that I'm not a fiend. Out of my own pocket, of course, because med. insurance does not cover drug tests.
Never you mind that in December I had a full physical exam that Korean teachers have to take biannually. It's the same as the one for foreigners, except it's free and they don't test your blood/urine for drugs.
Oh well 6 months left. |

Is this an immigration thing or a Office of Education thing? I havent got a medical check or a drug test in like 18 months and no one is breathing down my neck about it. |
