I'm late to the thread, but this site is awesome:
http://www.utopia-asia.com/tipskor.htm
It gives you some locations and reviews of various gay and/or lesbian bars in different cities. Not just for Korea--they have them all over Asia. Enjoy! |

| I hung out with Hong Seok Cheon and his boyfriend a month ago (met him through a mutual friend). You can't believe the number of gay celebrities that are forced by their management to keep their sexuality mum. With the trend of gender-bending and gay characters in dramas/movies, however, it has helped the movement. But I agree with the above poster: older Koreans say they don't exist here, but younger Koreans have no problem with it. My good friend (Korean girl in her middle 20's) just came out to me last month and said she was bisexual. No big deal. |
I was disappointed by how he was tricked into coming out in an interview and deeply offended by how he was then promptly fired for it by his TV station (of all employers who should be tolerant). I just couldn't believe how they could turn on him like that. After all, it was pretty obvious that he was gay (you'd understand if you'd seen his show) and he seems like such a nice guy.
He was actually extremely popular with university students and young Koreans even though he was on a kids' show. My wife would watch the show just to see him. She thought the character he played was very cute, almost childlike, which he was...But, I recognized that he had created a character that kids who are rather effeminate could relate to (the best way to describe it would be to say that he was playing a child who'd grow up to become a stereotypically flamboyant gay character (props to him for having the wisdom and courage to so)).
I know some Korean kids who are most probably gay, like my son's classmate who absolutely wanted to play the princess in the school play (he also dressed up as Cinderella for the Halloween party). It would be nice for them if more of the entertainers they look up to could come out. |
