Hey NS,
I've long been helping teachers out, around the world. You can get a free course from me by going to http://schooloftefl.com and Sign Up using the code "eflclassroom" I'll comp you an entry by upgrading you into the Basic Certificate Course. You'll get a certificate and all that jazz. good luck in the course.
But to answer you directly - the cheapest course is free. Teachers helping Teachers.
DD
PS. Only been going about 3 months and already have over 400 graduates. |

Not to step on the idea of 'teachers helping teachers', but to offer your course up in a thread with the title "What is the cheapest online TEFL certificate" isn't doing your course any favors.
It is indeed cheap. |

What this means is that basically people could just enroll on some online course, flash the certificate of registration with no intention of actually following through. Or they can just pick up a fake cert from bangkok.
Korea needs to standardise this, make it an E2 requirement. Insist on two or three credible courses, require notarised copies of certs and get formal verification from the institution itself. |

If they did that, Hagwons would be short on teachers. To offset the low supply and the fact that teachers would be more qualified, the academies would have to increase wages, which would bankrupt many of the businseses.
Unfortunately, your "standardization" plan cannot, and will not, make practical sense. Perhaps through a 5 year transition period, it might be doable. |

In terms of being internationally acknowledged, it would have to be a CELTA or a Trinity qualification. These are normally priced at around 1000 pounds, however I found a course in Oxford providing a CELTA for a few hundred pounds, not bad at all. I didn't do it, but that's a good price, comparable to many of the other Online TEFL courses that aren't really worth the paper they are written on...and yes, could just pick up a CELTA from Koh San Road |

That sounds a bit dodgy to me. the cost of the CELTA is based on hiring three tutors for a month, renting the rooms they need to teach in and paying for the external assessor's fee and hotel room. CELTAs don't usually have a large profit margin. They can charge less in places like Thailand where class rooms and accommodation are cheaper but I don't see how they can run a proper CELTA in Oxford for a few hundred pounds. Unless they're cutting major corners but then they'd be caught out when the Cambridge rep pays a visit to make sure they're doing everything properly, which they do on every course. |

Thank you, ddeubel. I want to do EPIK in Fall 2012. Will this course be an incentive for more money in the program? |

NS,
I can't say that this will be accepted by EPIK or SMOE for a pay increase, nor can any course say that. Beware of such claims.
However, I'll note that anyone completing the course can use my name as an academic reference and the higher level admin at EPIK and SMOE know me well and the quality of professional development I've been involved in.
I've taught all kinds of TEFL courses. From MA to online rip offs (yes, went undercover twice and it's atrocious how they give their tutors a pittance and take most of the $ for shoddy material and worksheets) to teacher's college and AQ courses. I know the business.
What it boils down to is the person administering the course. The trainer. Be it face to face or online. I'd pay based on this and this alone. The rest is just a $ squeeze. Check out and get personal with the person actually teaching the course.
I am a believer in the backpacking teacher. That with support and some basic materials - anyone can be a great teacher. You don't need crazy amounts of accreditation and to pay vast sums. You'll only weed out those without means and not poor teachers.
However, it will take "the system" time to catch up to this and the value of informal, social learning.
I see open source courses and informal learning as dominant in the future. Knowledge shouldn't be for sale and technology is allowing all of us access. But bottom line, do what is best for your given situation - just realize "free" does not equate to inferior quality. That's bogus nowadays.
Just had another graduate message me right now - here's his message about the course.

Hi there, I just finished the online TEFL course. The course was really interesting. It was a good refresher and good revision. I finished a TESOL certificate in December at a university in Seoul and I start a TESOL MA at uni in a couple of weeks. I did this course to keep myself engaged during the vacation. I downloaded or bookmarked all of the extra materials. Several of the links are broken by the way.
Thanks again.
All the best.

Um... David doesn't need to prove anything to anybody. Do you guys even know about him? If not, google him. I'd go for his TEFL degree if I were the OP. |

Fanboy.
Yeah, we know Dave, but so what? We can still have opinions.
Take solace: he is so respected here that he can even get away with advertising on the forum. |

I used Lingua Edge and it was like $275 or something like that. But I remember looking at prices and it was undoubtedly very cheap and a very good and professional program |
