Hi there,
I wanted to get an opinion if I should start applying to teach english in korea.
I have an interview with a recruiter that handles public schools but don't know if i will be rejected because I am just at the beginning of my process.
So far I sent out my FBI Fingerprinting on 2/1/2011
I plan to renew my passport on 2/14/2011 (takes 4-6weeks after that)
The other document like diploma, transcripts, etc are easy for me to get access to on the same day and I will wait until I get the FBI Clearance before sending my notarized diploma & CBC to get apostilled.
Ideally I would like to be in Korea late March to early April.

I would wait until you have your CBC. Recruiters don't care much about teachers until they have that. You also need the other stuff, but the CBC is the big one.
I suggest you plan more for late April or May. This will give you time to choose the school. I would rather do this than jump on the first offer I get. |

| will there still be public school jobs available to start in April/May? I'm interested in rural work (I know I'm weird), but my impression was that EPIK only takes people in March/September. |

| I started applying as soon as I could, just as well as it is a pain to get all the docs required! |

There will still be individual schools looking in Apr.May.
EPIK will be going through the process for their fall term recruitment by then as well. (August starts)
Until you have (ALL) your documents (with apostilles) in hand, no-one working with any of the PS systems will seriously consider your application and it will likely just get lost in the e-circular bin.

I'm kind of in the same boat as OP, except I'm just waiting for my CBC to come back from the US State dept and I'm waiting on my passport to come in.
Is it pointless to start applying before I have my passport in hand? |

Yes. Nothing can happen and no-one will take you seriously (since you can't travel) without a valid passport as well as your CBC and degree copy (with apostilles).
Read, get up to speed on the ins and outs of working in Korea, the visa and ARC processes as well as how to change jobs when things go pear shaped.
Read up on and be pro-active on learning your new trade (how to teach, how to make lesson plans, classroom management, etc).
It is not dead time.

Yes that is what I have been doing. I'm currently taking a TEFL course, so that is taking some time.
I haven't read about how to change jobs if things go awry though. Thanks for the advice. |
