The Chink in the armor and the couple inches comment are uncalled for. Can't believe the headline itself made it to print. Its wrong, plain and simple. Can't see how it can be defended as anything but a racial slur. Believe it or not I don't like throwing the racist tag out there too often but that line is obviously wrong and everyone knows its a slur.
Still, its great for the NBA to have a Lin. The NBA has wanted to diversify the league for a time and make it a global sport and they were delighted that Yao Ming brought over a billion Chinese viewers with him. The Europeans are similar. |

Yea, these things are uncalled for, but not surprising.
Let's face it, a lot of people are happy for and rooting for him, and some people half-aren't and are ready to bury a hachet in him, same stuff as in school. |

Blindingly obvious ploy by ESPN in the sense that "Any news is good news". All cooked up to get people to keep on paying attention. I mean, seriously, you think people who have been vetted and are part of a national website are that sloppy? All a part of driving the hype machine.
Lin has game, but at what level?
My best guess is maybe Rajon Rondo level. Not a transcendent point guard but nonetheless a "plus" option. A good number 3. The turnovers will go down. His shooting should improve. The big question is whether he can improve going to the left. Turnovers and shooting improve with time and experience, I don't know about the left hand. At the least he's Derek Fisher. At the best he's an All-Star. In between he's a fringe All-Star like Rondo. Maybe 12-18 pts and 8 assists. But that weak side hand and the perimeter defense are his two biggest liabilities. The latter, he at least has size to help him out but the former...that weak hand, either you have it or you don't. Long-range shooting will go up, turnovers will go down. His handle is alright. But man, a guy like Lindsay Hunter would eat him alive. |

Wow. This isn't good: http://www.koreaboo.com/index.html/_/general/girls-generation-and-chocolat-songwriter-r13187
Songwriter Jenny Hyun has been put under fire for her recent tweets towards black people, blasting them with racist and hateful comments. The misguided anger started with a tweet by Floyd Mayweather, a famous American professional boxer.
Upon hearing the tweet by Mayweather, Jenny Hyun, songwriter for Girls' Generation and Chocolat, began tweeting racist and hateful comments towards blacks. She begins with comments stating that Mayweather should be "worshipping Asians", calling him an "ungrateful APE". She continues on to write comments about black people and how the only way they can advance is through white people, citing slavery as a prime example.
She goes furher than that. Instead of addressing Mayweather specifically and without any racist comments, she goes after an entire race. Mayweather is an idiot as well but she has gone way, way over the top. Seems like she always had these thoughts and the Mayweather comment brought them out. Sad. |

If she is the one responsible for these lyrics:
I know life is a mystery, I'm gonna make history
I'm taking it from the start
Call all emergency, I'm watching the phone ring
I'm feeling this in my heart (My heart)
B-Bring the boys out
then I'm shocked that she could string any coherent thoughts together. |

Not to mention that song is a ripoff of "Who let the Dog's Out?" done by black artists.
She also says, "Imagine a world with NO BLACK PEOPLE..."
Imagine her music and K-Pop without the influence of black people. Wouldn't even exist.
And yet she believes "Blacks should be worshipping Asians..." Oh really now?
Why does Lin's race have to be such an issue? He's a good athlete who also happens to be Asian. Wow, big shocker there. Diversity in sports is good, no need to start a race war over it. We've got a long way to go still I guess. |

I read an article this morning about Lin's response to the whole "chink in the armor" headline.
I wish I could find his quote again. Basically, he said he doesn't have any ill feelings and that people should just forgive.
What a standup guy. From Lin's comments and actions these past few weeks, he's a class act.
EDIT
Founds the article.
"I don't think it was on purpose or whatever, but (at) the same time they have apologized. And so from my end I don't care anymore," Lin said after leading the Knicks to a 104-97 win over Dallas on Sunday. "Have to learn to forgive, and I don't even think that was intentional. Or hopefully not." - Lin

Assuming its a white guy who did the 'Chink in the Armor' headline, I'm wating for her to tweet about white people now. Don't think we'll see it.
I like Lin a lot. The NBA needs players with a little more humbleness about them. I'm not a Knicks fan but I'm cheering for him. |

Update on Jenny Hyun:
| Quote: |
"Jenny Hyun has been admitted to a hospital today. She is a paranoid schizophrenic and has been battling mental illness, a debilitating disease for many years.
Friends and family of Jenny want to extend their sincere apology for any harmful statements made verbally or via the web that Jenny has made while she was in the height of a psyshosis episode. We appreciate your understanding during this difficult time for her." |
I guess that's one way to handle damage control. Just flat out admit she's crazy. |

Apparently she had previously blogged about her mental illness. She also described herself as:
27; female; Korean American; NYC; Christian/Jewish/Buddhist/Hindu/Humanist; singer; songwriter (Girls' Generation, ChoColat); poet; dancer; lover; fighter
Sounds kinda like a nutty hippie.
What's funnier is her "I REGRET NOTHING" chicken meme:

Maybe. Looks like saving face to me. And now she gets to play the victim.
(Is that too cynical? Maybe I've just been in Korea for too long, but it just seems like a calculated PR move to me. Especially since she's connected to Girls Generation. Any blemish that reflects on K-pop would be a strict no-no. They'd have to double the marketing budget from the damage!)
Of course, if she genuinely is schizophrenic then that's a different story, but I've heard similar sentiments from some Asians before, just not worded so directly, so it's unclear if her words could only be caused by "psyshosis".
Either way, good move on the part of her family, because her words could easily cause a sh*tstorm. |

Nah. She did write extensively about her mental illness and some big breakdown she had. Here's a sample blog entry from August 2011:
"Since I was 20 yrs. old I have tried virtually every psychiatric medication under the sun. I was beginning to lose hope in finding treatment for whatever it is thats wrong with my brain. Im taking 2 medications that are helping me so much to the point that Ive normalized almost completely now that Ive been on these meds for a few months. Although Ive fallen short on advocating psychiatric medications. Some people are easier to treat with meds than others, and theres always a high chance of the medications making you worse than before. That actually happened to me which is why I avoided taking meds for this long."
And from September 2011:
"The problem with my illnesses is that they cannot be cured, only treated. Every day is a battle with my brain, which works against me often. But I see myself improving all the time, and Im just glad Im going in the right direction.
It has been about a year since my mental breakdown. Its hard for me to believe that the person who was bringing me down was myself. I became my own worst enemy, and everything around me, including my sense of self, was crashing down." |

Bummer. Yeah, she obviously isn't the most stable individual that's for sure and probably needs some help. It explains a lot. But not everything...
Do breakdowns lead to racist thoughts? There's a chicken and egg aspect here. If anything, her mental state may have led to her to be less able to filter her thoughts from the outside world. Twitter, potentially racist leanings, and mental illness: not a good combination. And plenty of people have breakdowns but do not go on racist rants.
She even said on one blog she doesn't regret writing any of that, but we have to take everything she says with a grain of salt at this point.
And why did the family specifically choose now to put her in the hospital? As to whether there's no PR/facesaving angle going on here either from the family or Girls Generation it may be too early to say. Though I don't blame them for trying to minimize damage and get her some help.
Actually we'll probably never know much because now the official line will be she had a breakdown, didn't know what she was saying, and is very sorry for everything she said and she suddenly loves black people again.
And hopefully it will just fade away. |

Sad to say, I've seen/heard worse rants directed at Korea/'Koreans by unhappy foreigners than anything Jenny Hyun had to say.
She needs help. I'd try to help.
I've had a lot of experience with psycho Korean girls. I should open my own clinic. |
