I'll be moving to Suwon next week. I still need to get a place around Suwon station. If you are from Suwon/visit/know about help me get started =)
1. Good officetels/walks up/price range (key money and rent)? What is the best method to get a place, and how long does it take? Anyone know any good real estate agents that they've used? Any websites to check out places? I checked out oneroom.com thus far.
2. Boxing gyms, regular gyms, indoor basketball?
3. English doctor/dentist?
4. Jim jil bans?
5. Foreign food stores and foreign food options?
6. Where is the closest immigration office?
Thanks for your help. |

1) There aren't any around Suwon station. rentals - 2-10 mil key money and 50-100 man won rent.
2) Don't know
3) Aju university hospital, St. Vincent hospital.
4) Just look for the signs. I like the big one by the home plus at Haniltown (kitty corner from the Suwon Sports Complex).
5) LOL.. foreign to who? Seriously, go to Seoul (7777 bus from suwon stn).
6) Suwon.

1. Depends on how close you are talking to the station. On the BACK side of the station, there are some newer places that are decent (10 mil/400k a month), but they are across a slew of rice paddies and the buses from there to the station suck (at least as of about 2 years ago they did).
5. Suwon is loaded with foreigners - esl, 3d workers, students. Head towards samsung near yeongtong for a nice selection of indian food (and real indians if you're there around shift change). Lots of good s.e. asian places around - look for the factories and the 3d workers and you're set.
6. To be more specific, and a bit less ornery - Suwon Immigration office is in Yeongtong, by Kyeong-hee university. It is NOT on the west side of town, down the road from Hwaseo - it moved about two years ago, so DON'T GO TO THE OLD LOCATION. Kyeong-hee main gate (I think it's the main gate - really big columns, north side of campus) on the road towards Yongin/Silvertown/Expressway 1, north of the campus, east of the homeplus. |

Move away from Suwon Stn and you have lots of (housing) options in all price ranges and if your work is around Suwon Stn the bus service getting there is pretty good from most other places in the city.
Personally, I prefer north Suwon (just north of the north gate of the walled city). It has everything you could ask for and convenient transportation to Seoul (sadang stn) and Seongnam (Moran stn) when wanted.

As far as the Jimjilbangs and gyms go, it depends on where you'll be living. There's a gym up here in Jungjadong that some of my coworkers frequent. As far as doctors go, I've found most doctors speak English. Had an appointment with a dentist and a urologist who both spoke English. Both were located in the same building as my office. |

Great, thanks for all the info. I am going tomorrow to check out places. I guess I have no major reason to go to Seoul except for the occasional night out so I guess my location preferences will be strongly based on awesomeness of the place and convenience to work and the gym.
A few more questions:
It seems that Yeongtong is the area where people generally go out, so how much would a taxi cab ride cost from there to the Jangnan-gu part of Suwon?
Is the Suwon immigration office quick or a mess usually?
What's the quickest way to get from Suwon to Gimpo airport?
Thanks for the FB link! |

* Taxi from Jangan-gu to Yeongtong costs usually between W10,000 and W15,000, never more than W20,000.
* I used to live in Yeongtong, I would say it can be great one week and dead the next. Now Bar is basically the heart.
* Suwon Immigration is usually busy but the processing time is standard. It depends what you are doing there?
* Suwon to Gimpo, take the airport bus.
Good luck. |

There's an awesome Indian place pretty close to the station. Cross the pedestrian bridge from the mall that's connected to the station, go down the stairs to the left and then go straight. Keep going until you see a jewelry store on the corner on your right (maybe five minutes). Turn right down that alleyway and the restaurant is right there.
Also: Sam Ryan's opened it's Suwon branch a couple months ago if you want good Western pub grub. Wing specials on Tuesday, rib specials on Thursday. |
