English teachers actually make up a very small number of foreigners in Korea. Although the media, and people in general, give us a lot of (sometimes unwanted) attention, we are actually a very small minority of the small minority of foreigners here.

Yes, isn't it something like 30-40 000 EFL teachers out of more than a million foreign residents.

Only if the age difference is like 20 years and they make less than $2000 a month or something.

I think with ESL teachers and the military we make up about 50-60 thousand people, that's a drop in the bucket, something like 4% of the foreign population, for such a small group we create a lot of noise, LOL

Uhhh, how exactly does banning mail order brides, who have never been in the country, cause a drop in the foreigner population in Korea?

Typical of the Dave's crowd. Big on the critical, not the thinking.

Fewer incoming residents wouldn't contribute to a drop?

I'm not a huge Julius fan either, but clearly his comment was made in jest. Typcial of the Dave's crowd. Big on sensitivity, not on humor. (myself included)

If the foreigner population was largely based on foreign migrant workers and not primarily residents that might be the case. 30, 000 teachers in 2010, year, 23,000 in 2011. As noted however, transient workers (DDD or E2) make up a small part of foreign residents in Korea.

Drop, 2 million here last year, 1,900,000 here this year.

That means that you would need emigration (or death) to have a drop (people have to leave).

Otherwise the population would remain constant. 2 million last year, 2 million this year.

.

Which would eliminate many people.

And I don't think it's fair to say these are scams.

I used to take Korean lessons with a woman from the Philippines who met her husband through one of these agencies. She spoke English fluently (she had worked for an import-export company), was about 25 years old. Her husband was 35 years old or so. They communicated in English since he also spoke it with a good level of competence. By far the cutest couple I've ever met. He'd sit in during the lesson and they'd laugh and giggle the whole time while she was trying to talk to the tutor that was assigned to her. You could tell by the way they looked at each other that there was a lot of love between these two.

Without getting into the military issues. In terms of ESL, we make a lot of noise because we get a lot exposure in the population's daily lives. Many Korean children see us every day at school/hagwon. Many parents see us dropping off and picking up their kids. They see us around town shopping. We stick out.

Immigrants from SE Asia or China (who make up the majority of immigrants here)who are working other jobs don't really get that exposure in my opinion. Unless the parents work along side of them. But I don't think most Korean parents work with foreigners.

We have been tasked with caring for and educating children around 40 hours a week. This is a high profile position in terms of importance and exposure to most families. I don't want to stereotype certain populations, but many immigrants from China and SE Asia are working "behind the scenes" in factories, restaurants, etc... Most people don't see the Chinese guy cooking your food. You don't see the Phillipino working in the factory making LCD screens.
