37th National Rookie Boxing Tournament
I think that's how you would translate it into English. Anyway this year's Rookie Boxing(신인왕전) tournament will be held in Jeonbuk (전북 완주군 문화체육센터). The preliminary bouts start next week on the 27th and last until the 29th. Kind of a weird to have it all on weekdays, but whatever.
The Rookie boxing tourney is held every year as a contest among new professional fighters (previous 5 bouts or less). Thus, all the fights are 4 rounders. It will be aired live on MBC sports. Anyone interested in the potential future of Korean boxing should check it out, although I bet most people will be working at this time. Myself and a fellow gym member will also be fighting.

Good luck, man. Balancing work and pro boxing is TOUGH. It's ok though, because the Korean guys you'll have to fight have many more distractions than you do -- work, school, pressure to get married, impending army service, parents and society looking down on their boxing, etc. etc. etc.
If you've been training hard and eating well than you'll put on a good showing. If you have decent amateur experience in your home country then I'd wager you'll win the tournament.
If you can make it through the first couple fights, they usually schedule the next round of fights on a weekend. Your buddies will be able to go, and I'll try to make it then, too.
I made my pro debut in the Korean Rookie Tournament in December, 2005.

Nice record. Didn't even know foreigners could compete. Respect man. Why did you quit?

That's what I thought too but not this time. The semi and finals are scheduled on Thursdays and Fridays. Don't know what's up with that. |

I had to quit because of my bad hands. I've broken them too many times. I've had 2 hand operations in Canada, and and three here in Korea.
Back to you though, man. Any amateur experience in your home country? |

Re: the Thursday/ Friday scheduling, I gather that's due to the available television timeslots. Boxing isn't the draw it used to be, so I assume MBC would rather put other shows on during the weekend. Too bad |

Ow that sucks. My hands are fine but I'm having ankle and knee problems myself. Probably will be my first and last professional experience. I enjoy eating way too much to be cutting weight.
My home country is Korea, and yeah I've only had three amateur fights a couple years ago. I imagine this is way different.

Other than the date and venue (Feb 27-29, Jeonbuk Culture Sports Center) I can't tell you much. Even the Korean Boxing Association site doesn't say much. Which is kind of strange. You would think they would do a better job of advertising this sort of thing. It'll probably easier to just catch it on TV |

I didn't know you're Korean! Haha, I hope you don't have many of the distractions I listed earlier
As you probably know, the guys you'll be fighting (for the most part) have very little amateur experience. And any of the guys that have a pro fight or two only fought against other debuting guys.
The two most important things in this tournament are:
1. the draw
2. conditioning (physical and mental)
1. The draw: That will tell you whether you get a bye, how many times you'll have to fight to win the tournamnet, and who you'll be making your pro debut against. If you get a good draw you can rely on your skills and your conditioning for the first couple fights, and gain some needed experience for the semi-final and final, against the other winning fighters.
2. Conditioning: If you have good conditioning, which I'm sure you do, then you should be setting a fast, aggressive pace for the fights in this tournament. Start strong, regardless of his amateur or pro experience. I've watched MANY rookies' amateur/pro experience disappear after taking a couple of hard shots right from the get-go. Go right at him, hit him hard and hurt him. If you've got good defense, now you can block his initial "retaliation flurry". He'll start to tire from the missed shots and from the nervousness that he's getting from not landing his shots! Then it's your turn again, and now go to the body. And punch to hurt. Be aggressive! The Korean judges LOVE aggression. You have to be in condition to do this for four rounds, but don't punch for four full rounds! Between your flurries, rest with your hands up and your elbows in, either out of harm's way, or (better yet) up against your opponent. I think you mentioned Kwak Kyung-suk a few months ago (maybe). If that was you, then you know how he leans against his man and rests when he wants to. And before you know it, the bell will ring to end the first round, and your coach will give you the instructions you need for the rest of the fight.
As for mental conditioning, well, I've always found that it comes with the physical conditioning. It's VERY important, but if you KNOW you're in shape, and you KNOW you've done your work at the gym, you will be mentally prepared.
Oh, and those butterflies that have already started in your stomach, that get almost sickening come fight day? I miss that feeling every day of my life |

I can't wait for a scrum to break out and see a flash of a green soju bottle.

Ha, you caught the Chisora show. Ugh. The guy has absolutely no class. OP! Don't follow his pre-fight slap, pre-fight face-spit, post-fight brawl example. As much as it didn't fly in Moscow, it would go over even worse in Korea |

Got a few myself just reading your detailed writing. Brings back memories of some tournaments from the past. (not boxing though, just Judo ...no danger of being punched, but in some ways it's still a fight, depending on aggression levels. Had a shoulder pulled out of its socket and a cracked sternum before, hence the butterflies.)
How did you break your hand? I've been hitting a heavy bag for several months now and getting knuckle and wrist pain more. Would like to avoid injury.
And good luck fermentation! You seem pretty serious about the sport so I'm sure you'll do fine. I'll see if I can tune in but keep us posted anyway. Maybe post it on Youtube later? |

Thanks for the advice Joe. I'm an offensive oriented guy so I should be good in that regard. I am a but worried about my conditioning though. On good days I can spar 8-12 rounds. Sometimes I can barely make it through 6, although that could be the weight-cutting messing me up. I am definitely putting in work at the gym though. My trainer is making sure to that.

Ha I actually wondered if that sort of drama would give the sport more spark, or would that not work in Korea? It definitely gets people talking about it in the US.

I don't know if you have had any formal boxing training, but in case you don't, make sure to use wraps and bag gloves. Proper punching technique goes without saying as well. If you're doing all that and still hurting, maybe you have brittle hands. |

I never wrap and the gloves are super old and falling apart. They are the smaller, less padded kind (not MMA but still small). I didn't think it was that important and I thought I could tough it out, but over time I'm feeling a difference. I'm not serious about it but I guess it's time to upgrade.
I only have a couple lessons from years ago, so technique is probably a factor. And I go all out on the bag full power for about 30 minutes, experimenting and putting a lot of weight into some of the punches. And I have a boxing fracture from a previous injury (not boxing) which swells up sometimes after a workout. I guess these could all factor in. |
