Seems to be happening more and more frequently lately. Come 10 -11 o'clock at night all the ATM machines (not the bank ones) become inoperable. Anytime during the day from 7 in the morning up until the aforementioned time at night I can get money out no problem. I've just noticed this happening the last six months or so. Up until the middle of last year I could withdraw money anytime no problem....but not these days. Not sure whats goin on. Is part of some Govt decision to try and curtail Koreans drinking until the small hours of the morning??....I dunno.

Nope the ATM's in Korea have always shut down at 11:00 and started running again around something like 4:00 in the morning (i'm not sure). You might want to keep that in mind. I had another foreign teacher with me almost go berserk over it once.

I seem to remember that this has something to do with the kind of card you have. For whatever reason (and this could be wrong), I think this only happens if you have an ATM card. I have a debit card and I've never had trouble taking out money.

I assume it's to stop drunks from emptying their accounts and heading to the slots.

Just go to the convenience store ones, they seem to work pretty much 24-7.

Not so....up until about six months ago I could take out money from street & convenience store ATMs any time, day or night with my ATM card. Doesnt seem to be the case now.

Not sure how u can withdraw money from non-bank ATMs with a debit card. I've got an KB debit card and I've never been able to.

If you actually have a debit card, something's up with it. I used to have a KB debit card and I was always able to use it anywhere. Again: are you sure you don't have an ATM card? I mean, can you use it to pay in a taxi or at GS or whatever, or can you only use it at ATMs?
