I'm going to do my Master's in education online since my goal is to teach back home in the states (or teach in an international school in Korea). The problem with these education programs is that they usually require student teaching or internship back home (in my case, the US).

I'm currently deciding whether I should apply to Grand Canyon University for my M.Ed. They told me that I can fulfill the student teaching requirement in an American international school in Korea, but that they can't guarantee a position for me. So, it's up to me to find international schools willing to help me out.

Has anyone done this, or have any suggestions?

Also, I found a pretty unique program run by the University of Maine-PI, specifically made for people who want to earn an American Bachelor's in education in Asia, which can be used for licensure in the US. The student teaching requirement is fulfilled by your current job (hagwon or public school). It's extremely convenient, but I'm not quite sure about it... I would've applied in a heart beat if only it were a Master's program. http://www.umpi-eaop.com

Anyone know of any other similar online programs?

25,000 grand for a one year program to get a teaching certificate in Elementary Ed! What is the world coming to? That's an asinine amount of money for such a measly program.

Yeah, the price is a bit much, but the field experience and student teaching can be done in Korea through your current job, which is really convenient. I'm considering this, actually... I can just get one of those cheap online one-year M.Eds after I'm done. Laughing

Also, does anyone have any opinions on Grand Canyon University? Their reviews are horrible and I don't like the fact that it's a for-profit school. However, they offer a M.Ed with licensure for a decent price, and the student teaching can be done in Korea as long as I find an international school that'll accept me.

The name alone turns me off. I have serious doubts about the validity of this "university" just by name alone. Did you check if it is regionally accredited in the USA?

25k? That's a rip off. Try this one: http://www.teacherready.org/

It costs about 5k and it's legit. You'll have to have currently licensed mentor teacher at an international school though. It's online, but at some point you'll have to go to the states and pass three exams.

It's one of the satellite campuses within the University of Maine system, so it's regionally accredited through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

The program in question is still way overpriced, however.

Thanks! I'll check this out.

Swampfox, do you mean Grand Canyon? They're regionally accredited, but they have a reputation for being the "Christian University of Phoenix." Laughing But yes, UMPI-Presque Isle is a legit school.

Edit: This TeacherReady program sounds like a dream! Shocked

Keep in mind that these programs are only certifying you in one state. Maine for the one and Florida for the TeacherReady program. This is not a problem at all if you plan on staying and teaching at an international school in Korea. However, if you try to come back to the US and find a job in a different state you may find it extremely hard if not impossible to reciprocate your certificate with another state with no teaching experience stateside.

I'm not saying that this actually limits or eliminates any possibilities, but it is definitely something to consider.
