I get your point. However, where that songwriter will probably never find work again, it wouldn't impact GG. GG is not famous enough to where people would care. |

People will do the old...GG? hmm...something about Korean girls, racism and blacks rings a bell.
I can only imagine the members of GG must be pissed.

No one I know outside of Korea has mentioned or tweeted anything about that chick. So, my guess is there is no tainted fame or links to racism. |
Obviously I hope ur right.
However, the influence from these things sometimes manifest themselves later on. |

Now, this is something that's befuddling me. Korea isn't exactly known for its kind treatment and consideration of those with any kind of mental illness. Yet, here is someone touting that as the reason for unseemly behavior and it's a ploy for sensitivity towards that person?

She has problems.
When she tossed up the fake apology, followed by the spinning chicken with the caption "I REGRET NOTHING" all the while posting videos of Wiz Khalifa, Snoop, and Chinese Jews, was she still having a psychotic episode? Who knows. She was of sound mind to remove her earlier posts before she did all that. The last post was allegedly from her family quoting psychosis. Only she knows for sure if she is really mentally ill or not. I'm not going to believe a blog, but I will follow my instinct based on someone's actions.
I was also correct- some in this thread thought she was abused by some black dude(s) and others mentioned Korean girls that were prejudiced to a ridiculous degree. That's fine, but I posted the theory that she is a coward. No one here is qualified to prescribe drugs for a mental illness, let alone diagnose one so I don't know why some are accepting what a blog says as fact. Until the truth comes out, my opinion stays. |

Many Koreans are viewed by many African-Americans as people who hate them. That includes some who work here. I'm not going to say that there aren't problems from people on both sides like the fellow who commented on the Asian player. He had a point that black people do that all the time. That's true, but people also notice Dirk Nowitzky who is German. People also noticed the Croatian players we had in the 1990s who were quite stellar.
I can't say how this would affect GG. I like the band. I hope they can get some good publicity. The author of the article's named Yoojin. That sounds Korean. I'm not sure most Americans have heard of this.
I feel for her that she has mental illness, and if you have it you'll often focus on what is very negative. I hope she gets better. I wish GG well.
Let's not blow this thing out of proportion, but I don't accept that her illness excuses her behavior. It doesn't in my book. Her comments were terrible, without a doubt. |

Imagine the backlash if it were flipped around like that.
Any guesses as to how that would look?
Might be a sharp contrast to the 'sweep it under the rug' tactics and attitudes that we're seeing now.
Not saying it shouldn't be swept under the rug, but if it were flipped we'd likely see a completely different reaction from many.
These are all just bumps in the road for Linn. Once people get used to him, his race won't be an issue and the jokes and flame wars will subside. |

Lin is set for life. Even if his basketball career flops he'll get a nice 6 figure salary with his name recognition + Harvard econ degree.
I can't even begin to imagine the amount of endorsements he's gonna get in China and Taiwan. He can very easily start his own brand empire in Asia, doing what Michael Jordan did with Nike, but on a scale much much bigger. |

My Korean students -- and I've had more than I can count -- hate blacks and Jews.
I've tried to incorporate discussions about blacks and Jews into lessons about US culture and it always quickly turns into something ugly.
Anti-black and Jewish sentiments are systemic here even though there are few Jews or blacks. Of course, in a globalized world, this hostility has no borders and is frightening.
If Kpop has any capacity to bridge the east/west divide, its going to have to involve a lot more than pyrotechnics from Samsung, smiling and bowing. Hell, remember when Tiger JK's baby son Jordan was ridiculed all over the Korean internet for looking black?

I've read those "history" comic books as a kid and I do think that they are way oversimplified and often filled with half-truths, but I think it's a stretch to call that particular strip anti-semitic, although it is oversimplified. I think a lot of people tend to brand anybody who questions America's Israel first policy as a racist.
That being said, a lot of Koreans I know do not think highly of Jews and black people. |

Im very curious why K students hate Jews. Black people I can sort of understand since stereotypes are widespread in Hollywood but Jews on the other hand are represented as nothing but nice regular people in movies and tv shows |

I have never heard any negative comments about Jews from Koreans, actually. Many Koreans admire Jews. I've heard of negative comments about black people and dark-skinned people, but I've never heard of that from Koreans. I've taught many Korean students from executives, hagwon kids, to college kids. I haven't encountered anti-Semitism talk. |

Of course, we are all talking about what we've heard which is hardly scientific but...
I have heard a lot of anti-Israeli commentary in Korea. Maybe anti-Israel is too harsh - a lot of disagreements with how Israel treats the Palestineans without much question of Palistinean behavior or the historical role of the Arabs in creating the problem.
But, I have also heard and watched documentries (here in Korea, made by Koreans) praising Jewish culture - at least they admire Jews for their education and their perceived ability to accquire wealth. Can you imagine anything more Korean?
In the documentary, they had a Korean adoptee who was adopted by rich Jewish-American parents (I think both her parents where New York lawyers). I can't remember what university she is now attending, I think it is Yale. She talked about how Jews value education and how she was raised to study well.
I have heard Korean parents talk about emulating the "Jewish model of education" whatever that is.
I doubt Koreans are anymore anti-semetic than any other population on this planet.
Most Koreans I have met "value white skin." (Whatever that is.) But, they can be completely open to other cultures, including African-American. They do not have any problems having a "black skinned" teacher. Some might openly comment on it. Some might say they don't like the skin color. But, they really are just commenting on skin color and it probably doesn't have anything to do with their feelings of everything else about the person. To them, it is like saying, I really don't like your hairstyle (which is rude in the West and obviously you can change a hairstyle and not your skin color but that is the way it seems to be perceived in Korea from my not so scientific personal experience.)
Now, what the GG songwriter wrote is horrible. I wouldn't defend her with a 10 foot pole. She should be condemned and if she has mental disabilities she needs to be handled better. But, I would not paint this as a Korean mentality. |

This. Though perhaps the poster who has encountered such individuals tends to deal with particularly religious Koreans. |

My kids found out that I was Jewish, and I told them that I'd probably attended more after-school and weekend classes than they do. They seem to respect that Jewish families value education. Pretty much all of the women in my family work as teachers, social workers, or in medicine. The men work in hard sciences, law, or management.
Anti Jew and anti Israel are two different things. Many younger Jewish people are anti Israel, these days.
Back on topic: the video/twitter comments/everything about this fiasco is appalling. I hope those behind this are shamed publicly. |
