I do agree that some people do ask too much for things that they want to sell and I have definitely seen my share of those "buy my used deodorant stick for 50 cents" kind of thing. It wasn't like I was trying to sell used shoes or left over toilet paper rolls or anything like that. I had a bed with nice headboard that I bought last summer and wanted to sell because my new school was buying me a new one instead of paying to have it moved to my new place.
Bought it brand new for about 220,000 trying to sell it for 150,000 because honestly it was barely used and still looked brand new. I don't think that it was asking too much for a practically brand new bed, and even dropped the price again to 125,000. What kind of offers do you think I got? 50,000. 50,000 was my highest offer. That's more than 75% off the original store price that I paid. Needless to say, I told the people I'd rather shove it where the sun doesn't shine than basically give it to them for free like that.
I don't know...glad I'm not the only person that feels this way, but man the nerve of some people. |

| Haha, another thread about how stingy/greedy people can be, always good for a laugh though it is sad as well. If a few bucks is a big deal you've got a bigger deal than that to live with. |

Yeah about 125k is reasonable for that. I think the rule of thumb for 2nd hand stuff in good condition is around 50 - 65%. |

Like I said earlier, if you decide to spend a lot of money on something, that's on YOU--
It's nobody else's responsibility to make up to you money that YOU decided to spend, especially on something that we all get when we move here like a bed?!!
You should be grateful anyone wanted to give you anything for it-geez!
I sold my 600, 000 won flat screen for 100, 000; and my 300,000 won treadmill for 50,000.
That amount was fine with me- most of my other things I just gave away.
It's kind of funny when people say "I spent xxx amount on something."
So what?? What does that have to do with anything, really?
I do think it's totally cheesy though, to say you're definitely going to buy something at a certain price and then try to lowball or back out--- |

I totally get what you're saying Feloria, but its the principle of the thing. Don't be such a stingy d!@$-face and I won't be insulted by you wanting something for practically nothing. And, to be honest, when you're trying to sell or get rid of something, saying how much you spent has everything to do with it so stop making it seem like its insignificant to the argument, because its not. Also, you totally got ripped on your items and by you selling your stuff for that cheap just perpetuates the situation and makes people think that "hey that guy did it so everyone should" kind of mentality. If you think its fine, then that's your prerogative, but I think it sucks and that's my prerogative. |

I would also say 125k sounded like a reasonable price for the bed. On the other hand, if another person doesn't really need a new bed because he'll be leaving in 6 months or something like that, I could perfectly well understand why he would give a low bid. In that case it wouldn't be worth 125k for him, but he could take care of transportation and you could earn a little as well. Of course, if someone is calling you, taking up a lot of time and seem eager to buy it and then start to haggle, then that's quite a different situation from someone posting "I'll take it for 50k" on a public message board.
The original cost has some bearing, but not much. What is important is how much it's worth for the new owner. I bought my bed at a 30% discount, so if I was trying to sell it for 80% of original price, I would actually be making a profit. If you are trying to sell electronics, original price is completely irrelevant, and you have to look at what a similar product will cost today.

Well there you have it.
Who was being cheap in this situation?
Your school was buying you a new bed, so you weren't out any money at all. In fact, you were going to profit from whatever amount of money you got for it. But you weren't happy because you weren't making enough profit...forget this taking a loss nonsense.
I guess the point here is that nobody wanted to pay that kind of money for a used bed...regardless of what you wanted them to pay.
Remember...to you it was practically new...to everyone else...it's a used bed. Period.
And almost every teacher here...(just like you with your new bed)...gets a free bed. Their school pays for it.
So why would they pay any money at all?
50,000 was all it was worth to anyone at that time.
The fact that you didn't want to sell it for that was totally up to you.
The others weren't being cheap...though it does seem that maybe you were. |

@Cosmic Hum--
Exactly!! +100
Sure I was lowballed on what I got for my TV and treadmill.
But when I bought them in the first place my thinking was: Is the comfort or pleasure I will receive over the next year and a half from these items worth 900,000 won?
I decided that it was, and I got my money's worth during that duration--if anything, I thought of any money I received for them to be a bonus***
But I guess I'm just not that hung up on possessions and money. |

I'd never pay that much for a used bed. That's not cheap, that's just yucky. A hotel is one thing, but something that you're going to sleep on every night for a yearwell I'd rather buy something new. My bed cost 430,000 won new, and when I leave, I'll probably just leave it at the apartment for the landlord, unless a friend asks for it.
If someone wants to buy at least a year's worth of your dead skin, 50,000-75,000 won is fair. |

If you were just gonna be here for 6 months though; just buy a cheap mattress / yo and sleep on the floor or go to a 2nd hand furniture warehouse, of which there are plenty in SK.
Floria, I paid 450k for a 2nd hand tv that was originally over a mil but about 5 yrs old and I sold it 1.5 yrs after buying it, for 200k (to a friend, anyone else I'd have wanted 350k and would have got it too.) I'd have easily got 100 for the treadmil - easily. Not trying to rub it in, as you don't care anyway, but seems like you could have got more money if you tried. looks like you're out 250k on what most people could have got for those items.
Not as if money is something that's not of any importance to anyone.... |

Floating--
I should probably have mentioned that I sold the TV to my former boss, who was so unbelievably helpful when I had to deal with a crisis(my wallet was stolen a week before I had to leave KR), it was my pleasure to sell it to her for far less--
For the treadmill though; you're right--I was a bit lazy in that regard, but no worries!! |

I don't really see the big difference between buying a second hand bed from another foreigner and buying a second hand bed from a 2nd hand furniture warehouse. |

If you are going home, give your stuff away to good people.
I ended up giving most of my stuff away and only left with a suitcase and my computer hard-drive.
Most of it is crap anyway right? |

Some people are better at saving money than others.
I gave all my stuff away when I left. Happy to do it too.
Those people you disparage for offering you pennies for good stuff have learned how much they can spend and how much they HAVE to save if they want to lie on a beach in Thailand every six months.
Kind of makes you wonder if they turn around and sell those things for more than they paid you for them... |
