I spoke one of the managers at Tinpan. He said they got tired of the fighting that went on. It wasn't that foreigners were starting fights, but he said in the majority of the altercations, a foreigner was involved (either as a victim or assailant, or just being at the wrong place at the wrong time).
And, I really think you should look up the definition of "racist". His sign says Korean only. Would it surprise you that a gyopo is also denied entry to Tinpan because of their ARC? How can an establishment be racist when they don't even allow peopel of the same race?
Tinpan was trash anyways. The owner is doing all foreigners a favor by not allowing them in. |

Agreed, but I think this sets a bad precedent for other clubs in the area. |

| While I agree that they are doing a public service by banning foreigners from the place, Tinpan is probably the highest profile bar to outright ban foreigners; this could set a precedent for other bars to follow. |

Only douchebags genuinely like night clubs. Everyone else just tolerates them and pretends to like them to fit in. At 27 when I meet someone who still "goes clubbing" semi-frequently my respect for them plummets.
Anyway, screw Hongdae night clubs. No way would I pay 1만원 or more to stand in a big, sweaty room with terrible music and fights breaking out every two seconds. |

Pkang0202, I've looked up the definition of racist, and the sign still fits the definition, in my view.
In what context did you speak to one of the managers? More generally, would the doormen even check the ARC cards of gyopos, even if, technically, gyopos aren't allowed in?
But even if Tin Pan is consistent in that way, denying entrance to gyopos, I still have trouble reading the sign in strictly nationalistic terms. It might as well say, "no white people or black people allowed." Moreover, Koreans seem to have a very strong conception of cultural purity and the bloodline, and the notion that foreign nationals of Korean descent are somehow "tainted" supports a racialist notion of inclusion/exclusion.
That said, you're probably right that "The owner is doing all foreigners a favor by not allowing them in." In fact, after reading your post, Tin Pan now sounds creepier than ever. You write, "It wasn't that foreigners were starting fights, but [the manager] said in the majority of the altercations, a foreigner was involved (either as a victim or assailant, or just being at the wrong place at the wrong time)." Yow--does this mean the fight was always Korean-vs.-foreigner? Sounds like the locals really want to be left to themselves.
Whatever, we know Seoul ain't a cosmopolitan city, and if we don't like it, we can leave. But I'm just saying, that's an egregiously racist sign. |

Is that referring to the cover or the club? It's hard to see a place like Tin Pan denying entry to foreigners, considering they've typically made up a very large percentage of the clientele. |
I was with a Korean at the time and he asked and confirmed that no foreigners are allowed into any of the bars. When asked why he was told that it's a new policy by the owner. |
That sets a really, really bad precedent (even if the place is a dump). Even so, those bars have always been loaded with foreigners. I really have to question the wisdom of banning foreigners from the establishment, from a business standpoint.
Also worth asking: did Tin Pan have a no military policy prior to this? Or did they go straight from all foreigners permitted to all foreigners banned?
As for the person who said it wasn't racist because gyopos wouldn't be able to get in either: I'm guessing they're going with an eye test on this one. |

banning foreigners is nothing new to hongdae.
tinpan will do it, then some other bars will follow and they will think they have made a wise business decision, meanwhile a bar down the road will open up his bar to foreigners and he will see a steady flow of cash going into his cash register , and then for the next 6 months his bar will be VERY busy, and he will be making money hand over fist. then the other bars will see a drop in sales and they will change their signs, to NO AMERICAN PERSONAL!
to bring back the English Teachers who spend more money than Koreans do per head.
I've seen it a couple times before in the past. wont last long. |

Hongdae is becoming the new "trash" area of Seoul. The Tinpan I remember (last time I went was a year ago) there were so many people you could not move without shoving, pushing your way through all the people. Making your way from the entrance to the bar would take a good 10-15 minutes of pushing/shoving. Along the way you get at least 2 drinks spilled on you, your foot stepped on 5 times, and dry humped by dancers who are too drunk to know who is who.
The Neanderthals (referring to the small group of patrons that would never pay a cover to enter anywhere and will start a fight just because they are frustrated they didn't pick up a girl that night) that used to go to Tinpan will just have to go someplace else. |

| As a relative newcomer to Hongdae-living, what are some good places that we're allowed to go to? |

i think this is true for dive-type places like gogos/ffs/places in that area, but in proper clubs i very, very, very rarely see foreigners spring for bottle service/vip which is where those types of places make a big chunk of their money. if m2/mansion/etc started denying entry to foreigners, it really wouldn't put a dent in their business. |

It will probably never get into some people's heads but I'll say it again. "YOU HAVE NO BUYING POWER."
Foreign English teachers make up like .05% of the population. The salary is peanuts compared to what many other people make. Especially when most of that salary is going back overseas. I just think its laughable that English Teachers think they are some giant group of consumers with buying power to influence business.
Take a good hard look at many places in Itaewon these days. Many of those businesses are doing BETTER having mostly Korean customers instead of foreigners (B.ONE is a perfect example).
Now, I'm not saying its right to deny foreigners entry. I'm just saying that you have no power/say to control it. As a group, English teachers don't spend enough money to make anyone care. Its the cold hard truth, you might as well accept it. |

For the most part you're right, but English teachers make up a solid 10-20% of the Hongdae going population, and generally have more money than the Koreans that go there, given that it's typically a place for the young when it comes to locals. |
