|
|
"The woman, who asked to be identified only as Oh, 38, is part of an Internet group with thousands of members who have suffered as a result of marriages with Pakistani and Bangladeshi men. The Korean women writing there have shared stories of being tricked into marriages with migrant workers from the two countries as well as verbal and physical abuse....
" 'There are so many women who have similar stories as mine. Most of us were hesitant to marry a migrant worker, but all of the TV shows and news stories beautifying multiculturalism and the stories of multicultural families living happily in Korea comforted us,' Oh said. 'But now, all of us are suffering from broken marriages. I just dont want to see any more victims like myself.' "

Oh met her ex-husband, identified as M, in 2006. At the time, M was a migrant worker staying in the country illegally but the two grew close and he tried numerous times to propose. |
This story is all kinds of fail.

Yes...all the tv shows that beautify marrying illegal migrant workers are certainly to blame. |

The only multicultural marriages Korean media have ever beautified are those between Korean men and peasant southeast Asian women.
Show me a single show about foreign men from Pakistan or Bangladesh adapting to Korean culture (learning to cook, learning the language) in order to fit in with their Korean wives' family. Used to see shows like that about foreign women all the time, but there's just no way Korean TV would celebrate Pakistani male-Korean female marriages. I'd eat my shoe if they did. |

I can't imagine Korean TV encouraging marriages between Pakistani males and Korean females. Perhaps, in the West, there has long been this idea of accepting all cultures and turning a blind eye to any negative aspects of those cultures. |

5 to 1 men to women ratio? Where did you hear that? Impossible. That would bring on armageddon. |

Don't know the name of it but there ARE shows like this from time to time, I've seen them.

Seriously, how on earth does one get tricked into marrying someone? How stupid would you have to be? That's not rhetorical, I really want to know just how stupid you'd have to be.... I mean if you really fell in love and he acted like he was too and then it turend out he just wanted a visa and acted differently after he got it - yeah I guess I can see that... ok, my own question answered. |

I'm middle eastern looking. You'd be surpised how many korean women desperately want to visit India or the Middle east.
I've had some women practically chase me down....if they have a major in Middle eastern studies, I don't even have to try to sleep with them.
Migrants is a little vague; I know plenty of rich ones who make ESL salaries look like chump change.
They're not all Kebab guys or factory workers. Same for Nigerians. |

Actually, I know one Pakistani guy/Korean lady couple living in Gwangju. They are indeed happily married. In fact, the guy in question learned how to speak Korean in part by watching the soap operas. Actually, he is quite open minded. |

One common scenario is that men from certain countries try to tone down the cultural implications of marrying into their beliefs / traditions while dating and then push the agenda after marriage.
When this is combined with the Korean habit of marrying quickly without living with or sometime even knowing their partner well, it could be a recipe for a very unpleasant marriage. |
