i couldn't find much specific info on how much people were paying to have their cars maintained/repaired so here is some info. i don't know if i got ripped off but i thought it was reasonable.
this is what i paid/quoted for my 2000 hyundai:
both front brake pads: 35,000
oil change(non-synthetic, just the regular stuff) and air filter: 35,000
timing belt and all other belts (fan, etc): 240,000
i purchased all genuine hyundai parts, but the mechanic told me that the price for generic brand parts are 10-15% cheaper.
if you can add some info on better car maintenance/repair prices/places...please post. |

Sounds right.
I usually get synthetic oil because it lasts me about a year.
On an old car you might want to look at if the AC needs more juice, and whether your shocks need replacing. |

Yeah, those prices sound decent.
I hate paying car taxes in Seoul. I pay 160,000 twice a year in tax. It's based on engine size. |

You get 10% off if you pay the whole thing at the beginning of the year and another 5% if you participate in the non-driving day thing. But seriously, 320k won a year is highway robbery. |

That's nothing. In the states, I remember paying $450 for the Vehicle Registration Fee and double that just for insurance. |

Depending on the car, 320k sounds not much different than California's registration fees. Now where you get off lightly is on car insurance. I would kill newborn kittens to get the kind of rates that exist in Korea. |

What kind of Hyundai do you have?
The oil change is the same as in the U.S., but the brake job is ridiculously cheap. Not sure about the belts, but they sound like a deal. |

It's great for some higher-end cars with smaller engines. But for certain types it is highway robbery. It shouldn't cost $650 to register a Subaru but only $360 to register a Mercedes. My mom's Lexus RX would cost her 700k to register here, $300 in California.
The oil change seems really cheap. I used to pay $75 a pop to change the oil on my 98 Camry (and no, it wasn't the V6). |
