Long story short: I've been arrested 2 times in my life. Once was when a friend threw a lit firework inside an apartment building and I was with him when he got arrested, so we all got arrested. The second one was for driving without a license due to a registry error. The first was Cw/oF, the 2nd was flat out dismissed when I brought evidence of the error to court.

I had the records sealed when I applied to teach in Korea, back when only state checks were required. I have copies of before and after the sealing with one showing arrests and the other clean. However, I had heard that the FBI check will still show sealed records.

I got my FBI check recently, and to my delight it shows no arrest record. So let it be known, that if you have been arrested in the past, it is possible to have a clean FBI check. Go to the court where you were arraigned and get the records sealed. Tell the judge that arrests on your record will hurt your chances at getting employment abroad. I did it with 2 separate judges with no problem.

Mods ARE pretty strict here, but you're likely to get a warning the first time, and the thread will be deleted.

In any case, you're right arrests don't always show up on background checks. A friend from the UK was arrested several times and got a clean report as well (though obviously that wasn't FBI, but the UK equivalent).

But mine DID show up on my state background check before I got my records sealed. It proves that there's at least a chance that if you had a record before, there's something you can do to make it go away.

I have actually done 6 months in prison when I was 17 for GBH. But in the UK a conviction is considered 'spent' after five years.

And before anyone chimes in about shouldn;t be allowed to teach, I was 16 at the time of the incident and the guy was 26 and had just robbed me of all the money I had on me. Plus when I started teaching I was 26, so pretty much a different person.

You won't have any argument from me on that. I'm not at all the same person I was when I was 17. There's a reason children are tried as minors.

See how he says "in the UK". I think it stands for Great Britain Haircut. Guy robbed him, he gave him a nasty haircut and got 6 months, seems fair to me.
