I work in a very rural area outside of Daegu. My co-ed MS has 60 students so you can get an idea of how small. I've never seen anything like this in all of my explorations of the area.

I've noticed there are older houses were people have a yard, even though it's dirt 99% of the time, but the house are very run down broken windows, trash piled inside there fence and house, small gardens etc... But there will be a TV so you know someone lives there.

I would in the rural areas there is more space and the families have had the houses for 40+ years so no real need for a shanty town.

I will look more carefully though.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that half of those shanty houses have a late model car parked out front?

Isn't that often the way it works in Asia? You see the same thing in Bangkok - houses built out of scrap above a canal but with a big flat screen TV inside.

It's not hard to imagine how it works. These people might be employed in central Seoul and have enough money for a few nice items but not enough money for better housing that's not in a distant suburb. At the same time the shantytown is probably tolerated but not approved by the government so they don't want to put their money back into a house that might be demolished to make room for a new Lotte Castle.

There are quite a number of cars around in the satellite photo. That's during the day time, so some of the empty spaces could be filled up during the night time. I bet they are an eyesore to the properous bunch living just across the road in Gang-nam.

Think it's a leftover from Korea's poorer days. They are squatting claiming some land or something is owed to them. Can't quite remember what that place is all about. I've seen some shabby buildings in the provinces. But nothing like this. This is 3rd world country material.

I used to work at the YBM right near there. My friend blogs about it here.

they are sitting on prime realestate.
one place was already burnt down in gangnam to get them to move so the area could be divided up and sold off for certain people to profit from.
this one will be next. anyone left will just be collateral damage.
Money talks.

Not to mention, as someone said, they could be sitting on prime real estate and are simply waiting for the right time to sell...Heck, if I had claim to that property I might live in a shanty while I wait for that big check.

steelrails: do you really want a visit from 'removalists' wielding alumium bats? They are not furniture movers.

I think about now would be the time to sell.

Not sure the bubble will hold up in the next 3 years. Especially with a change in leadership on the horizon.

We can only hope.
