I have heard of IPODs, Zune, Creative Zen, and Cowon. I wasn't too crazy about the Itouch. I had it, but it didn't have the best sound.
Unfortunately, I have to replace mine. That bit's my fault. I was looking at possibly getting a Cowon. I do have a smart phone, though. A Galaxy phone that is. Would I be able to have say a 32 GB card to have lots of music or do you think I'm better off with an MP3 player that's separate. What's your take on the Cowon? I hear that it has great sound, and you can get Flac files....

If it has to sound great and play flacs, then you can't go wrong with Cowon. I'm using the J3 which has been great. Cowon also recently came out with the Z2 which runs on Android. I haven't played with one yet or even ever had an Android device, but I've been hearing good things about it.

They all come in 8, 16, and 32 gig sizes with a micro SD slot for up to extra 32 gigs. They can also take micro SDXC for an extra 64 to 128 gigs, but you have to for the cards to FAT32 I think.

Different galaxy phones have different sound processors. The original galaxy S has a wolfson chip which is famous for its sound quality. THe galaxy S2 uses a sound chip from yamaha. I think the note and nexus use the wolfson chip as well. One thing you can do to improve the sound quality on your phone is to download a third party media player. I've heard good things about power amp. A quick google search can find you one. you can play flak files one galaxy that way too.
A friend has a small cowon. He likes the sound the quality, but I find hte UI on it to be horrendously bad. I wouldn't buy it.

My galaxy S2 and PowerAmp take care of my audio needs.

PowerAmp is pretty awesome, only app I've ever paid for and consider it well worth it.

Your galaxy has the good sound chip. If you like your phone and want to keep it around for awhile why don't you buy a couple of replacement batteries?

I love my Cowon D2. It's at least four years old now and I still regularly get 40-50 hours out of the battery. The sound quality is great, but the interface sucks and very occasionally I get an MP3 or two that it just can't play for some reason (re-encoding usually solves the problem.)

some good in ear buds are klipsch s4. They now have a new version that comes with a remote that works with android phones.
did you check out power amp? Its supposed to be good.

power amp is a music player app. it is supposed to increase the sound quality of the music. YOu can check it out on android market. They have a free trail.

THe klipsch s4 should fit in your ears. It comes with three different sizes of silicone ear pieces. If none of those work for some extra cash you can order a set of different size ear pieces. I have a pair and they fit fine and have excellent sound quality. They are considered to be one of the best sub $100 dollar in ear headphones on the market.

If you like bass and treble, Poweramp is very good. Has nice graphic equalizer and separate bass and treble knobs. Get the free trial and check it out.
