Ever wonder what happend to ROKon Magazine? The founder tells his side of the story this week over at asiapundits -

You really think anyone's wondering what happened to ROKon????
Granted, I read the article, but it wasn't to get to the bottom of this expat journal mystery. It was more like the way you read something on facebook while you're waiting for your roommate to vacate the bathroom. Seriously, do you think anyone would shed any tears if ten or groove went under? They'd be replaced with another rag in a matter of weeks.

If that's the magazine that had the funny pics then that was very funny indeed. Funny because the pics were so true!

same same but different belongs in thailand not Korea.

and how many foreign magazines are there anyways.. to many!
and they all pretty much suck, full of advertisements.
expats blogs are way better.

Thank God! Finally the straight dope so we can put the myriad of rumours to bed. Not since things went south at The Reggae Bar has the gossip mill gone into such overdrive!. I was constantly on Snopes hoping they'd give me the scoop. And after all that what REALLY happened with ROKon was actually what just really happened.

Kudos to the guy for putting in the effort, but the way he sets up how things got started was akin to when Paul met John or Keef, Mick. I just shudder when I think "What if he hadn't gone to Incheon to have galbi?" "What if David hadn't also wanted galbi? What then?"

Those that say they could careless cared enough to click through a link to another site and read a full article, then come back to the original site they were on and respond that they don't care. There has got to be some caring in there somewhere, right?

Ya know, I went into this not really caring, but as someone who's been here for 6 years, I was a little more engaged in the second article.

It's not the most interesting thing ever, but it is cool whenever someone starts something in Korea and, fail or succeed, they do a retrospective. I honestly wish there were more stuff like this. I think it'd inspire more expats to get involved.

I've mentioned on the board before that I'm starting a business and yeah, succeed or fail, it's easily the most interesting thing I've ever been involved in in Korea.

As an aside, I think the reason why most of those early magazine's failed and Groove has had a modicum of staying power is because so many of them were focused on pushing their Friend's sites/fashion brands/bands, etc, instead of just FOCUSING ON FUN THINGS TO DO. Eloquence is a prime example of that mentality, and I think they're just riding off of brand-advertising as I don't know anyone who reads it.

It's kind of funny that ROKon failed because of internal fighting. If they hadn't there really would have been an interesting little war for readers since they had very similar content.
