Is reimbursement the norm? Are all flights into Korea paid for by the teacher and then you get paid back?

It should say in the contract. I think with public school reimbursement is fine, but with a hagwon it's probably best to get them to book them. If a recruiter/school is really pushing for you to pay and not considering anything else, I'd wonder why. They might be thinking they can get away with not paying, and they have no financial investment in you.

It turns out well for loads of people and they get their money back without any problems, but I'd rather just not risk it.

Standard for all public schools.

I would NOT trust a hagwan to reimburse you. There have been too many cases where problems routinely occur over it.

(fat or ugly and left at the airport - yes, it has happened many times)
(reimbursed in won at an exchange rate that is significantly lower (20-40%) than what you paid - refusal to pay in the currency the ticket was paid for)
(not reimbursed or required to wait for up to 6 months for it)

The list goes on.

If they hire you, yup. No such thing as a prepaid PS ticket.

The good news is you can sometimes come out ahead since they give you a lump payment. I personally made a couple hundred thousand off mine.

If your school is on the ball, they will have the money in your account in less than a week. Money moves fast in the system over here.

Take Asiana. DON'T suffer on an American or Canadian airline for 14+ hours. The food alone is worth any extra cost, although it's likely to match or be cheaper.

And gingers, normally the dark rusty red tops suffer the most discrimination, light ginger/blonde are usually ok.....

Seriously? I specifically checked that my hair colour was ok with the school as I dye it such a bright red that it looks pink. Yet there is a possibility that I could be left at the airport? Nice. What do you even do if that happens? Turn around and go home? Or can you get an LOR and start job hunting?

Yes, reimbursement is the norm for hogwans and public schools. Contrary to the paranoid and misinformed post from Ttompatz it is not a big risk to the teacher. However, prepaid tickets are a significant risk to schools. This is why hogwans and public schools don't prepay.

The best hogwans will not pay for teachers tickets in advance, although some recruiters will take the risk. Good hogwans have no need to take the risk.

Numerous would-be teachers have used the free flight gambit to gain a free ride to Asia, hopping off in Japan on the way to Korea, or jumping off from Korea to another local. This even happens with teachers who have E2 visas for a Korean job but actually plan on teaching in China. Others just miss the flight and the ticket money is lost.

Since teachers are always reimbursed at the good schools, there is no risk to the teacher and the school eliminates its risk by reimbursement.

Even at those schools that eventually cheat their teachers there is little chance of being cheated on the incoming ticket. Any teacher who is not reimbursed within a reasonable period can just walk away, and if the school doesn't pay for your flight you already know what's coming so it's time to run.

The ticket is just the beginning of a long relationship. If you don't trust your school to reimburse your ticket you should not be taking a job at that school.

Although this Dave's myth is widely recounted, it is never reported as actually happening to a real person. Where are all these teachers who were left at the airport because the school saw them and decided to just leave them there based on their looks?

I laughed a little bit imagining this situation in my head.
