ttompatz, my attempt at gaining employment in Korea has spanned every forum I can find, along with most every reputable recruiter, and I agree that it will be almost impossible without my degree. For me though, I realize the vast amount of underground resources that are left. I have tried most of those, however, the possibility of getting caught is too great for me to attempt to teach without a visa. Not saying that I would not but it would defeat the purpose.

It seems that Korea has gotten more aggressive in their cracking down on illegals working. I am not trying to suggest that the Native English teachers currently employed in Korea are not qualified but I assume as in many industries there are quite a few who are in it for the wrong reasons, and without the right qualifications. I myself know I do not have them, however, you have to begin somewhere.

Your application was handled by a couple of people at the most. They could have rejected you for the most ridiculous reasons possible. I would recommend that you apply for a public school through a recruiter that doesn't use EPIK or GEPIK. There are many schools that use private recruiters that don't rely on EPIK or GEPIK. You can find those right here on Dave's

I definitely second this option.

The season I applied for various Gyeonggi positions, most or all the Gyeonggi public schools found their teachers independent of GPOE. Some schools in Seoul or other provinces do the same.

It's not important for the OP, but one correction I'd make to what you wrote is: recruiters don't use GEPIK or EPIK. It's more the other way around. But even if a public school board does commission a private recruiter, that recruiter likely has many positions available at schools that have independently commissioned them to find them a teacher.

I am very passionate about the Korean culture, therefore I do not think I will have a difficult time adapting to Korean society if I do end up working in Korea. And I would love to have the chance to work in Korea so I can get pay teaching lessons but at the same time allowing me time to explore this fascinating (to me =P) culture and sharpening up my Korean speaking skills.

You seem pretty intent on teaching in Korea. But to be fair, have you ever travelled to Korea alone? I don't mean to suggest you don't know what you're talking about, but when you say you're very passionate about the Korean culture, I wonder what you imagine the culture here to be like.

When I came to Korea one year ago I didn't have interest in creating a Western-like microcosm for myself. I thought, I'm physically in a country on the other side of the globe, so what better opportunity to be there in mind as well? I (mostly) wanted to immerse myself in the Korean society & culture. I'm no scholar or social scientist, but for what it's worth knowing, my academic background was in the social sciences and philosophy. Basically, I wanted to operate like a cultural anthropologist, while at the same time hopefully forming some good friendships. After about six or seven months of this I began to understand the dominant culture and ways of thinking here on a much deeper level. If you think you really want to immerse yourself in the society because you think you like it, consider that your understanding of Korean culture might be pretty shallow without knowing it. And that if it is, you may discover (depending on how you think, what you value, and how you want to live your life) that what you've immersed yourself in is not particularly delightful.
