I'm sure most of you have heard about this by now, as its flooded everywhere on nearly all social media outlets. Basically, its a movement to find and arrest Joseph Kony of the LRA.

While I support the movement, I won't be participating in "Cover the Night" where supporters go out and put posters and stickers all over cities around the world. I know a number of foreigners in Seoul doing this, would it be considered a political rally which is illegal? I dont want some of them to get caught and face possible deportation or jail time. Anyone know the legality of this?

So let's litter the streets in a futile gesture just to make ourselves feel good?

You're probably fine in the political rally category because this doesn't deal with the internal politics of Korea so they could care less. Might get some sort of littering citation, but I doubt it as they'll probably just litter the streets like coupons, clubbing fliers, and cards for hookers.

I don't agree with the plastering of signs everywhere, but spreading awareness about certain issues that go neglected in the msm seems reasonable to me.

I am personally more concerned about this being a one sided video being passed around. It's a pretty complicated issue. From my limited reading on the subject, there doesn't seem to be that much to recommend Kony's enemies

I see nothing wrong with the guy.

He's giving children employment, teaching them new skills, whilst increasing their fitness levels.

Joseph Kony, sucessfully putting infant into infantry!

Also the thread title looks like some sort of festival with an Acronym for a name. I was seriously thinking some sort of Korean-New York fest or something, perhaps serving Coney Dogs or something.

Helpful Hint: If you want to get this scumbag, don't make the hunt for him sound like some event where either you go to some boring convention center or a festival that is an excuse to drink beer.

Interesting. I didn't get the impression from the video that they wanted us to support his local enemies, but rather authorities that would bring him to justice.

If there's a video about a notorious gang member and the atmosphere to bring him in, is that an endorsement of his gangland competitors?

I saw this more as an awareness video of his crimes.

Another perspective.

http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things

And some quotes from people I know who had a chance to meet the film makers.

Quote:
I met those guys in Dublin and they were a bunch of prieks! They dont even tell the story right. They're actitude is I am so cool and much better than you 'cause I care and you don't - sometimes I had a feeling that it was much more about them than the kids they are trying to save. However, if this is a way of people getting the message, it's good we share this cheesy video. I've been reading about Uganda conflicts quite a lot since the news in Guardian that state if a woman from the country side goes to work in the fields she gets raped at least 3 times a day.

Quote:
Yeah i was there that night too T___, the vibe I got was pretty much self righteous hipsters on a save the planet ego trip. Apparently there are some very dodgy dealings when it comes to where their funding goes too...

Quote:
Awareness, absolutely. A__ pointed out that this stuff is refreshing compared to cats and snooki's pregnancy. Im just making the point that awareness of what and who you are supporting is just as important. Horrific things are and have been going on in Africa for a long time, people should be outraged and talking about it. Its just to me the guys who made this video seem more interested in themselves than the issue, also they have some very suspect alliances, one being the current people in power in Uganda, also responsible for countless atrocities. http://jezebel.com/5891269/think-twice-before-donating-to-kony-2012-the-meme-du-jourThink Twice Before Donating to Kony 2012, the Meme du Jour jezebel.com

The whole Kony 2012 thing is retarded. Stickers all over the city? Raise awareness?

If people care so much about the guy, they should pick up a gun, make a militia, and take the guy out. Until then, all I see are hippies and hipsters making noise so they can feel like they are doing something good, when in fact they are doing absolutely nothing.

Nigerian-American writer Teju Cole with 7 Tweets on Kony 2012:

Quote:
1- From [Jeffrey] Sachs to [William] Kristof to Invisible Children to TED, the fastest growth industry in the US is the White Savior Industrial Complex.

2- The white savior supports brutal policies in the morning, founds charities in the afternoon, and receives awards in the evening.

3- The banality of evil transmutes into the banality of sentimentality. The world is nothing but a problem to be solved by enthusiasm.

4- This world exists simply to satisfy the needsincluding, importantly, the sentimental needsof white people and Oprah.

5- The White Savior Industrial Complex is not about justice. It is about having a big emotional experience that validates privilege.

6- Feverish worry over that awful African warlord. But close to 1.5 million Iraqis died from an American war of choice. Worry about that.

7- I deeply respect American sentimentality, the way one respects a wounded hippo. You must keep an eye on it, for you know it is deadly.

And even better, an actual Ugandan responds:

I want my activists, that are gonna bring down a warlord, to look and talk like a lumberjack or mountain man. Not these guys that look like contemporary Christian musicians (I'm a Christian so let's not get into what you wanted to with that statement.)

These guys are transparent and it's obvious.

This is pretty funny http://i.imgur.com/K3mgn.jpg

Not to get too much in the title, but implicit in the title is that there will be a KONY 2013, which means this isn't going to work, which means its a waste of time.
