A week in and this is still ridiculously easy. I've already planned my lessons for next week. I only have to plan two lessons a week, teach them over and over again, and no one cares what I do as long as I do that. I can't believe I'm getting paid for this. I would do it for years to save up 100,000 dollars to go home with if I wasn't scared of my brain rotting.
Why did I EVER work at a hagwon?!
Is everyone else's public school job this easy? AND I'm working 4 classes overtime per week. |

How many years would you need to do it to save up $100k?
How many years would it take to save up $100k in a hakwon?
For me, one of the reasons to work in a hakwon is the potential for higher pay...and my brain doesn't rot from doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again...but that is just me, and I am glad you found a place and gig that make you happy. I wish you continued good luck! |

You should try uni gigs: 10 hours a week, 4 days a week, 5.5 months vaca a year + super rotted brain and lack of motivation in life. Pay ain't all that either. |

I got an easy one also. But there are some bad ones about. It's almost like we should have a remembrance holiday for fallen teachers (the ones in the bad places). Think of all the variables that could have snagged you. Multiple locations, unfriendly/ mean/ rude CTs, disorganization. Some people aren't so lucky.
But yeah, PS is easy as hell. |

I work overtime in my PS so I'm making more money than I would at a hagwon while still teaching less hours. It would take me slightly less time to save up the money here than in a hagwon because of my higher pay. It would take me around 6 years considering I saved 15,000 dollars last year and plan to again... I would never stay here that long though.
I can see how this will rot my brain even with the overtime so I'm going to start bringing my kindle and some Korean books to study.
I thought about doing this for another year after this but I don't know... I am kind of itching to do something meaningful and more stimulating. Haha. It's just easy money. |

Universities vary greatly. I teach 12 hours per week, 4 days per week, 20 weeks vacation (two 10 week blocks), and get 2.8 after deductions (no housing, but 20 million for a deposit), which I think is pretty good.
About brain rot, you get out of it what you put in. I only prepare 4 lessons per week, but I put a lot of time into prep: Powerpoint presentations for each lesson, exam making and grading, etc. |

bektionary,
6 years for $100k was quicker than I thought for a PS postion -- good on you for finding one with that much savings potential! |

Some quick and easy math. The absolute top pay for P.S is 2.5-2.8 a month (depending on province)(that's for the standard 22 classes per week). Now let's say you have all the qualifications/documents you need for the 2.8 . Let's also say you do 8 EXTRA classes per week. (bringing your total teaching time to 30 classes).
Now standard pay is 20,000 won So that's 20,000*8=160,000 won per week
Multiplied by 4 (a month is 4.3 weeks but you get the odd day off here and there) that is an extra 640,000 a month. So 2.8 +640,000=3,440,000*13=
44, 772,000 won. Of course there will be a few unexpected expenses and canceled days so let's say 35 million to 40 million won in a year.
Even if we take the low ball figure of 35 million per year...for six years that's around W 200,000,000-72 million (1 million a month for food and other expenses for six years)=138,000,000.
Which is roughly 125K and that's the lowball figure...So yeah it can be done. |

TUM,
I wasn't saying I didn't think it could be done -- just that I thought it was harder to do at a PS than at a hakwon.
For example, the STARTING salary for anyone we hire at this hakwon is 2.925 million, for 23 class-contact hours...OT is paid at 30k won an hour...so the thirty class-hour work-week you posit would get a "newbie" at my school about 3.8 million a month before taxes, as opposed to the 3.4 million won for the PS in your example...so about another 5 million a year for someone coming in at the bottom at this hakwon, compared to someone topping out at a PS.... |

If you are a good teacher then the teaching aspect of the job is the easiest. The difficult part is the bureaucracy that you will have to deal with. You have parents to keep happy, a co-teacher to keep onside, principals and vice principals who think they know how to teach English better than you (maybe they do, I don't know your qualifications).
Also, with all this spare time you should ensure that your lesson plans are as good as possible. Are the kids learning properly? Did you create fun activities to help them remember what is being taught? Or are you using the book and doing the bare minimum?
This is your chance to make a difference in a lot of kids lives so make sure you make the most of it. |

Generally speaking it is. However, the wide range of quality in hogwon jobs can make those jobs 'better' than PS jobs. I had a rediculously easy first hogwon job I wouldn't trade places with my PS friends at the time if they paid me. I had friends with horror PS jobs, including crazy co-teachers and vice principles.
Uni jobs are the best. Hard to go wrong with those. Generally, nothing beats those jobs. |

Yes but that is an exceptional hakwon. Few hakwons pay that much. Most pay around 2.2-2.5 for experienced/qualified teachers...and those are at the top end. Whereas at any P.S (if you have the experience/qualifications) you are GUARANTEED a salary commensurate with those. (they have a SET payscale.)
So it's more likely with a P.S than with your average hakwon.[/url] |

Slack duties at the start doesnt mean your school has slack expectations. You have yet to prove yourself in the classroom -- thats where they'll judge how you handled your prep time. Whatever you do, dont let on to anyone in your school that you think your job is easy. Teaching well isnt easy. They will take offence & you dont want to get branded as lazy.
It sounds like you've landed a nice position. Now its up to you to earn the school's liking. |
