| To be fair, NYC Gal, those look like blogs to me. I'm not sure that being on a foreign blog is asking to being called out internationally. But perhaps I'm out of date. |

| It's a moot point anyway. In the minds of the producers and writers who created this little stunt, it was a Korean show for Koreans. They simply don't expect anyone else to care. They wouldn't need to be 'called out' on racial caricature being regarded with disfavor in the outside world, if the Korean media really regarded itself as an international presence- which is sad, because that sort of insularity is self-perpetuating. But advertising and ratings are their concern, as with any other country's tv industry. A few foreign complaints won't make a difference as long as the nation laughs. |

| The fact that you had no idea is just ignorance. Don't they teach global history in Canadian schools? It's a requirement in New York, at least, though I can't speak for the rest of my country. |
The particular phenomenon of black face - a minor American blip in the annals of global history - wasn't part of my Canadian public school curriculum. We were; however, certainly taught that racism was bad. Why should black face in particular receive any special attention? If anything emphasizing its racist-ness over other forms of racism is in itself racist.
As an experiment, I clicked through the first four pages of a Google search for "David Carradine as Poon Dong" and uncovered no outrage. This is from a Hollywood picture (Crank: High Voltage) with a budget of $20'000'000 that came out in 2009. It has been featured on TV here. If the Korean media decides not to censor "Poon Dong", a blatantly racist Asian stereotype featured in a major Hollywood film, why should they censor this variety show that no one outside of Korea would even be aware of were it not for this "incident"?
In any case, "racism" has long been a part of comedy and I honestly think it's not always a bad thing. This Korean black face stunt might not be funny to me, but this will never fail to crack me up. |

I have to say there's one point of view that I regard with contempt - the attitude that Korea doesn't even have any problems with inclusivity, or that if it does, outsiders have no right to point it out. It's sad enough when a Korean makes a priority of excusing his own country right or wrong, and it's just as pathetic when a foreigner does it for him.
. |
Well then it's a good thing that this point of view wasn't shared by many viewers/netizens

The controversial scene occurred when the two guests appeared as blackfaces and made a fool of themselves while singing and dancing. While they dressed themselves as the character Maicole from the cartoon series Dooly, which is well known domestically, from a foreigners perspective, the performance did appear to be blatantly racist. Many netizens expressed their shock at MBC for airing such a scene, while others defended by stating that they were merely dressed up as a cartoon character.
Korean netizens also flooded MBCs homepage with comments like What were you thinking? Its only understandable that these foreigners are angry. These programs are not just viewed in Korea anymore, but around the world, How can you guys be so careless, Please be more careful from now, and more.
On February 28, Sebakwi released an official apology on their homepage. The post read, We sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended after watching the special that was aired on January 21. The dress-up was simply a parody of the cartoon series... |
So it does appear that they were simply dressing up as a cartoon character and didn't realize the larger implications. But they STILL caught flak for it by many Koreans. |

Are you serious? Do you really think the majority of Koreans read or even understand foreign BLOGS?
If it was a major mainstream newspaper or TV channel then yes you might have a point.
But a few foreign blogs fail utterly at proving your point. |

TUM, I think you should stop to take a look at what you just did. NYC Gal said that MBC should have known better because they've been called out on this before. You dismiss the sources she cited, but not before providing your own Korean sources to prove that some Korean netizens were displeased with the performance. Shouldn't MBC have even LESS of an excuse for their stupidity, with some native viewers out there who are ready to call them out on it? And as it's not an isolated incident, it's some kind of a pattern. What is the reason for this pattern?
It's a good thing that some Korean viewers didn't enjoy what they saw. I would have been able to tell you that without being informed of it, because as I said, I know Koreans who are like that. Unfortunately their sensibilities are not quite mainstream yet, which is the only reason the network thought this was ok to begin with. |

I own up to the fact that I posted mostly blogs. I can't for the life of me find the 2 articles that I'd read about it in the past few months, but that's my fault, as I should have bookmarked them. My bad. Still, people are talking.
Buzzfeed is NOT a blog, by the way. The way that people get their information has changed. Not everyone uses only newspapers (online or offline) anymore.
Either way, even Koreans called them out on it, as cwflaneur pointed out. That's a start. If only these shows would listen.
Stay happy, people. |

She said (and I quote) "Called out by other countries"
Korean netizens do not equal countries let alone other countries. |

Actually it was I who pointed that out.
And they DID LISTEN. Don't you read your own links?

The production team also released an official apology on their homepage, stating,
On the Lunar New Year special broadcast on January 21st, the cast parodied a cartoon character during the Family Karoke segment of the show. However, there were viewers from abroad who felt uncomfortable while watching the show, so we would like to offer our sincere apology.
A Korean cartoon character was being parodied, so while viewers within Korea knew that the parody was of the cartoon character, international viewers were not offered a sufficient explanation causing a misunderstanding. This is something that occurred because we did not think carefully at the time about the fact that many international viewers also have gained a high interest in the show with the spread of the Hallyu wave. In the future, we will think through the selection of the material, no matter how small it is, so that we will not cause any discomfort to our viewers. |

| They've apologized in the past, yet it keeps happening. Apologies aren't enough. This behavior needs to stop. |

You know who else has apologized? Yep, the Japanese. And the behavior for which they've apologized to the Koreans has stopped. Do you think Korea is happy with that? I'll give you three guesses. |

What about the little cartoon black boy on the back of the wrappers of those chocolate ice cream bars? The one with an afro and rabbit ears. As long as people are still buying those... |

Really? MBC has done this and apologized in the past?
Links? |

I can't find the links, but the Bubble Sisters were in 2003. They (MBC of whatever media outlet it was) apologized and claimed ignorance. You only get that get out of jail card once. Their "we didn't know" free pass expired 9 years ago.
I just checked out the Billy Crystal act. It was not blackface. That's like saying that Eddie Murphy playing Saul in Coming to America was "Jewface."
Okay. I'm out. I keep saying I'm out, and you keep reeling me in. I really don't want an angry day, so I must bid you all adieu. |

I searched the Bubble Sisters on Google. There was no mention of any apology by MBC. There was sort of an apology from one band member...but very little coverage of it. What coverage it DID get was mainly from one expat blogger and I doubt many Koreans read that.
I believe you are mistaken about MBC apologizing for the Bubble Sisters though.
Oh and that is almost word for word what the author of the Marmot's Hole wrote

| And after that first "oh, we didn't realize," the free pass has expired. Forever. That Get-out-of-jail-free card is one-use only. |
And like you provided no proof whatsoever that this provoked an uproar and subsequent apology. |
