|
|
Hello
I don't suppose there are any laws about smoking in the halls of an apartment, are there?
The smell regularly seeping into my unit is sometimes strong and always annoying and unhealthy.
Just wondering if there is any existing law before I manage the situation.
Thank you.

No laws...
They are prob smoking in the hall because their wives don't let them smoke in the apartment!
You could ask them to go outside, something which might happen soon now anyway since the weather is getting nicer!
How you do this will determine the level of success that you achieve!
You could alway put a damp towel at the base of your door as well? |

Make a complaint to your building manager. They'll probably put up "no smoking" signs in the hallway.
Smoking in the hallways in apartments are generally not allowed. Some people do it because no one has told them they can't. |

Yeah there's a law on this issue, it's called 'The man up and stop moaning over nothing act of 2012.'
Not like they're smoking in your apt is it? |

I'm pretty sure it's not allowed under the HOA's bylaws or something of that nature. ....Then again given Koreans' penchant for following the rules I don't think this is going to make them stop.
IMO they really should do something about storing stuff in the stairway. They're meant for evacuation in the event of a fire. |

Ask them to move to a different part of the hallway first. Going to the apartment manager straight away would be sly

Let's see you could
A)Talk to the guy and ask him to stop. Gee what a concept.
B)Talk to your landlord
C)Deal with it
or...
D)File a complaint with your local government and cite health regulations.
or...
E)Ask the folks on Dave's for some magic solution. In that case you'll get something like this- "Blast hardcore porno and come to an amiable compromise over sharing a building."
Good grief, what makes people so scared to talk to strangers? |

Although I do agree with most of your solutions the fact that neither may speak the other's language could prove to be the problem here. |

I think a lot of the smokers don't realise how annoying the smell of smoke is to a non smoker when they are just chilling in their own apartment. It bugs the hell out of me.
Speak to the building manager, or even pop a nicely written note with a tin of spam (or whatever Koreans like...can't think) to the neighbours who are doing it. I think if you explain they might be happy to go outside. It's not a massive inconvenience for them unless they are high up, in which case the building manager is probably your last port of call.
The trouble is here, nothing, absolutely nothing is enforced apart from garbage rules, which are enforced with an iron rod. |

Well, you blast him for asking, but you've just given him a number of suggestions, thereby proving he was probably sensible to ask on Dave's. Communication can be difficult ai gwnei mo areithia 'r dafodiaith. |

Before replying to a post, I always make sure to read it clearly. Gee what a concept.

He was pretty clear.
Perhaps he doesn't read Korean and wanted to know if a law existed so that he had additional ammunition for dealing with this situation. He never said he wasn't going to talk to the guy.
He just wanted the facts before doing so.
But you're right, he's probably just some pansy. Good catch. |
