Tons of Koreans here in the Philippines "studying" English. They pay the Filipinos absolute garbage of pay and get terrible and wrong English in return.
Why is it that so many think it's a great (economically speaking) way to study but then say to the people here that they can't teach in Korea? |

And get taught wrong English with mistakes all over the place.
I can't understand why they would do that.
Tried negotiating with a Korean mom about teaching her kids. She wanted to pay me 300 pesos an hour for two hours. I was thinking about it and then she said she wanted it for 3 hours at 900 pesos. I said that it would be good if it was 1000 pesos for 3 hours. She said it was "too high" and that she can get Filipinos for 100 an hour. I thought back to when I used to work with her several years ago and the English level of the Filipino teacher that taught her kids was questionable at best. I didn't give in ..nor did she. |

| I think there are around 1,000 New Zealanders teaching English in Korea. As of 2006 there were 30,792 Koreans living in New Zealand (total pop' between 4-5mil). The one-eyed xenophobia kind of pissed me off a bit, too. |

Jinks oldboy, why would a Kiwi wanna migrate to Korea? No sheep here to sleep with. Don't even play rugby. This isn't xenophobia, ex-pat Kiwi, having good taste, are all down at Bondi. |

but 300 peso an hour is good in the phillipine for philipino.
so whats the problem?
nannys and house maids are cheap too, like 100 dollar a month!
so 300 peso is VERY good money for locals.
let those locals get a job in a store and see how much they make.
foreigners in Korea who teach at hakwons only make 700 peso an hour.
so you think 300 peso is garbage pay in PI??? I don't think so.. |

It is garbage. I am not a local. Have you seen the cost of things here?
I am a native speaker - well educated with many years teaching experience. They (the Filipinos) aren't native speakers. |

Because, even though the English is not up to standard, it is still English. You are basically forced to learn English during your study.
In Korea, you will be exposed to English what 4-5 hours a week. The 150+ other hours is all Korean. |

You do realize having a population of only 5 million means you have fewer English teachers to supply as well, right? What you think there should be 30,000 Kiwis teaching English?

No, I don't - obviously.
I think that on balance, I agree with the poster who pointed out that some people in Korea who would like to see all foreigners go "home" are conveniently oblivious to the contributions people from Korea are making in their new homes around the world. |
