I am leaving Korea tomorrow, and my ARC expires in exactly 1 month. My co-teacher is asking me to 'give it back' to her. That seems weird to me. And it's actually a problem for me since I had planned to visit a doctor on the off day when I leave.
Thoughts? |

In my experience, the customs people at the airport take it when you leave for good. Or even if you go away and it expires, they take it away when you come back (this was the case when I left a job early, got a new visa, and came back). You don't need to give it to anyone. I wouldn't... |

No reason to give it to her. The only people who have the authority to take your ARC is immigration, and they will ask for it at the airport when you leave. |

In fact, you will need it when you are at the airport to show proof of why you were in the country for so long. The visa that they glued into your passport is only good for 90 days. After that you need the ARC. So under no circumstances give it to anyone. You still need it. |

Immigration will demand it from you when you leave, you need to have it on you. Don't give it to your co-teacher. It may possibly cause problems further down the line for you if you do not turn it into immigration when you leave. |

Do not give it to your co-teacher.
i) you need it to get your boarding pass at check-in time.
ii) immigration will demand it at passport control and it is a 100k won fine if you don't have it to turn in.(not having it will also delay your departure while they process your fine and question you about not having it).
iii) you need it to see the doctor.
iv) it is NOT your co-teachers ID. She is NOT entitled to possess it.

Your employer may take it if they are going to give you an exit order (which you present to immigration at the airport instead of the ARC).
- but with only one day I doubt they have time to give you an exit order. Don't go to the airport without one or the other, or as mentioned above, you will be fined.
Employer or whoever may be concerned that you are not leaving the country and hanging around with one month left on your visa - seen that happen before ... |

This is highly likely to be your co-teacher's mistake. She may have read somewhere that you have to return it before you leave Korea, and she has wrongly assumed that you can return it to her. Just tell her that you have to return it to immigration on departure from the country. Legally, I don't think you are allowed to give it to anybody else. |

+1
Also, give her a copy if she needs the information on it. Most likely she is not informed of the process. |

Utter rot. The only people authorized to hold your ARC are you and law enforcement personnel (including, of course, Immigration officers) in the lawful performance of their duties. Your employer does not fall into those categories.

Rubbish. Your employer does not issue an exit order. Immigration and/or the courts do. |

The ARC is your personal ID. Why would the school need it? |

You hand the ARC card back at Immigration when you leave. If you don't have it, they may think you were working illegally.
Korea is so chaotic and unorganized that it is quite plausible for the teacher to have no clue about the proper process. |

Looks I will get a job in KOrea soon. What is an ARC? excuse the ignorance?
Also- what happens if you decide to use your air points to fly home for a week or two during your paid vacation, Do you need an "ARC" or do they just stamp your passport both ways?
Can someone also tell me -what are the actual paid vacation holidays at a public middle school in Korea-or does it vary from school to school? It doesn't say in my contract and I have a rather unhelpful agent! |

ARC = Alien Registration Card
It is your I.D. card (working visa) for living in Korea. You should receive one within your first month in Korea.
If you are leaving during your vacation, you just need to show your passport and ARC card at the airport and they will just stamp your passport like usual.
Your vacation days should be 20 work days a year. You should check your contract again as it should be in it. If not, make them rewrite the contract so the amount of days are stated in it. |
