What qualifies someone as half decent? I don't know much about soccer but I can see the skills involved in being a defender or striker. I just don't know what makes someone a good or bad goal keeper? The net is so huge! This is not a flaming post, so don't take offense. I would seriously like a little insight into what seperates a good keeper from a bad one. |

The main skills goal keepers need are agility, for shot stopping, good handling , for crosses and catches and positioning for limiting the areas of the goal the striker can hit. Height is obviously an advantage, as is strength and bravery, in order to do things like diving at the feet of players. Other useful skills are a strong kick and throw to get the ball up the field quickly. Outfield players say the best keepers e.g. Schmeichel, Shilton, Kahn, Buffon, had a kind of psychological advantage, or presence, in the way they seemed to fill the goal just as the striker was about to hit the ball. People also say keepers have to be a bit mad in order to do the thankless task in the first place. |

A good soccer keeper will:
1.) Be decisive. You need to make up you mind instantly to intercept a pass, collect a cross or slide at a player's feet, all with the aim of taking the chance away before it even arrives. As you noted, the net is big. Best not to give the striker the chance. The best soccer goalies never have to make the big saves.
2.) Angles/Posistioning. You are going to see a trend developing here. A superb goalie positions himself well enough that he rarely has to come up with the huge diving save. That being said he still needs the reflexes to get down and stop those power shots just a few feet to his left or right.
3.) Handling. Knowing when to punch/direct the ball out of danger, or how to control a good hard shot. Basically not giving up rebounds.
4.) A good goalie is like a general. You need to communicate with your defence. Let them know when a player is sneaking into a dangerous position. Getting them to hold their line and defensive shape.
5.) The prerequisite for every famous goalie......Be a little "off" |
