|

I'm trying to find a p/t job to fit around my uni schedule, but not having much luck. I've looked on worknplay and on here, but there are mostly really crappy gigs that pay 35k per hour. What other sites are good for p/t work?
Thanks |

if you are on an e-2 then you know its illegal to get a p/t gig unless your univ and k-immig signs off on it.
most jobs that are advertised will only take f-2,f-5's even if you tell them your school will sign off on it |

No worries, I'm on an F2. I was just wondering if there are any other popular job websites asides from those two. |

try craigslist
btw i've known of f-2s who have been fired from their univ positions for taking part time gigs if its prohibited in your contract, just because you're on a f visa doesn't give you free reign. |

Hogwon guy is right, check your contract for any clauses about out-of-uni employment.
Also, you may need to register the other work location as you will need to declare the income and pay taxes on it. |

I'm well aware of the rules and regs surrounding this, but I like to think 'what they don't know won't hurt.'
I worked in a public school for years whilst doing a part-time job. That has ended so I need to look elsewhere. Anyway, I'll check craigslist later. |

That is indeed up to you. What you need to figure out is this: is that p/t "gig" worth potentially losing a University position because you broke a contract clause regarding second employment?
Another issue: is the cash you earn undeclared? If so, is it worth it risking a heavy fine for undeclared income?
You are aware I am sure that you can legally register as a private tutor on your F-visa and set up private lessons if you do wish to supplement your income. As a University teacher/instructor, this should be pretty easy to set up and you would have lots of potential students. A simple check of your contract on the issue of out of university employment would be required again.
All up to you anyway. |

Actually, I don't know if the extra income was declared. I was paying tax on it, so I kind of assumed it must have been legit. There are certain risks involved, but I really need to earn the extra money. I took a pay cut moving from public school to uni and the wife is getting on my back lol.
By the way, are you suggesting I tutor my own students privately? |

Well if the income is taxed then its declared so no worries on that front.
As for private lessons, tutoring your own university students would be a bad idea. However, you can certainly find other University students to tutor or High School students (you worked a PS).
You just need to register as a pvt tutor as your F-visa allows it. |

Hey cj1976, you had to take a pay cut to move from public school to Uni? I was under the impression that public schools paid very low. Even if you had an B. Ed. degree. Is there something I'm missing? I hope so as I'd love to teach public, but can't afford to do it for peanuts. |

This is the pay scale for EPIK public schools
There is a link to the SMOE schools just below as well.
It tells you what qualifications are needed. |

I've been offered 2 jobs at Uni's near Daegu and turned them down because I would take a 500,000+ pay cut. (My wife and I are trying to pay pack student loans)
I have a B.Ed. and next year I will be at the top of the pay chart. Plus I get 150,000 for 3 schools and I pay my own rent so I get the 400,000 for housing.
From my understanding unless you have an MA in TESOL or PhD most Uni jobs are 2.2(max in my area), with 300,000 housing and maybe a million for travel money. |

Yes universities are overrated. Plenty take the low pay to look cool. |

While it depends very much on qualifications and individual circumstances, it's true that many people could earn a higher salary at a public school job than they would at a university. However, I don't think most people take the university jobs in order to "look cool". Universities usually have fewer teaching hours per week and significantly longer vacations. Even if the base salary is lower, in terms of actual hours worked they usually earn more. Some people enjoy having the extra free time to pursue personal interests. Others, if they can make it work both logistically and legally, can earn even more through part-time teaching with the extra time they have. Others would say that not having to deal with young children all the time is reason enough to take the pay cut. But everyone has their own priorities I guess. |

I'm not sure who thinks working in a uni looks cool. I took the job because I was fed up of teaching middle school kids and having to deal with useless old co-teachers etc. There are definitely pros and cons to any job - be it hagwon, uni or PS. I have a shorter working week than before, longer vacations, total control of my classes, young adult students as opposed to surly adolescents and I generally feel like a more valued member of the instution. However, I don't get the 500k housing allowance or airfare. Also, I had been with SMOE for 5 years so I had been getting the annual raises of 100k. |
