Welcome to the glamorous Korean company work life.

I've been told by my boss that we'll finished up "early" tonight and finish up tomorrow morning.

Meaning I get to go home before midnight and come in to a mountain of work.

Less pay than teaching, less vacation days, and less free time. Teaching English was such an easy, cushy gig.

Yeah, been there not going back to it either. For us it was just about 2x a month, and every time we had visitors from Best Buy and Home Depot, Sears. Screw that. Don't like the first five presentations I labored over for 12 hours today? Too bad, see ya tomorra bra!


Kidding, at least back home the expectations are not so far out in the Galaxy like they were there.

There was a period of six months at one company where, due to work scheduling duties falling to someone new who had no clue how to do the schedule effectively, I put in 10-11 hour days three or four times a week.

That said, I only recently started my first "corporate" position as an editor. It's pretty cushy at the moment, but I was warned there would be the odd project that required late nights/weekend work.

Hell, I know the previous editor, and they hit him up on vacation with work.

Teaching may be laid back and cozy, but if you don't know how to spin it into viable work back home and don't plan to stay here long-term, it can be hard to build on your career. I specifically wanted to get into editing/publishing, so am pretty satisfied.

The only thing driving me to keep this going is that its going to be valuable experience on my resume when I go back home and find a job.

I remember how ungodly inefficient working at a Korean bank's investment arm was. But then, I think every workplace I've ever been in has been very inefficient.

Nowadays I treat my employees how I always wanted to be treated. They're free to work at home, pick the hours they choose to work, and how much they want to work. I pay them weeks in advance and trust them to self-report their hours. My friend thinks I'm the worst manager in the world, precisely because I don't manage my employees. I probably should oversee their work more often, but right now I'm happy as long as they long as the work gets done in a reasonable manner.
