hello everyone, quick question:
do employers in Korea generally worry about your grades on your college transcript? i'm an excellent student now, but i left my previous institution with some less than stellar grades. I have a few F's on there. nowadays i'm cranking out a 4.0 semester GPA nearly every time. just hoping my past doesn't hold me down with regards to my career in ESL abroad.
my general impression is that it's not very important. if i've got a degree that may meet most employer's requirements. thoughts? by all means correct me if i'm wrong. |

nope,
the transcripts aren't for your employer, anyway. They're for immigration. |

The apostilled diploma is for immigration. Any required transcripts is for the employer. Employer's probably give them some consideration, but not as much as the host of other superficial things that are looked at, like good looks, a succesful interview, being lucky enough to have been hired by a decent hagwon at your previous hagwon or public school position, or for Americans your a really cool guy so you have plenty of good recommendations . |

Some employers care. They will ask for transcripts and check your subjects, grades etc. Most will not.
Immigration no longer requires transcripts. |

The vast majority of schools and recruiters won't even read what courses you took. |

When I got my interview at my awesome hagweon that I'm working, my boss didn't even considered about my university grades. He was more concerned whether I was a Catholic or Protestant and whether I could understand Korean or not.
You'll be surprised, there are a lot of hagweon franchises that worries about your religious affiliation than your old grades. It's a fortunate fact that I love my church and my workplace! |

True. The other things they like to ask about are:
-Are you single?
-Do you know Korean food?
-What do you think about Korean women? (Seriously, I've been asked that at more than one interview.)
Seriously though, the photo attached to your application will be scrutinized a LOT more than your transcripts. |

How about public schools? I'm working on applying to both GEPIK and EPIK. It seems like they request the transcripts AFTER the position is offered. Would they reject the offer after seeing a GPA that is less than a 3 overall? |

this is so true, I now answer like this because the truth only opens up more questions.
Are you single? NO.
do you know Korean food? yes, I don't like it, it's to spicy.
What do you think about Korean women? I don't think anything.
they are not my style. |

Hey Trog,
When they asked you about what you thought of Korean women what did you say?
I rambled on one time for about 10 minutes concerning that. I thought they wanted a detailed answer. Hey what can I say......I was informed as soon as the interview was over that I would not get the job. They expressed this in the clearest and most direct (rude) way you can imagine. |

But does anyone know if a public school would rescind a job offer after seeing a poor gpa on transcripts? |

Why am I not surprised by this. I'd have guessed you would have just said "The younger the better" and then asked what company policy was with regards to dating former students. |

My less than stellar GPA (embarassing low because I'm a lazy bastard that took too many advanced courses without the required prerequisites) didn't cause me any problems getting my SMOE job. |
