I don't think I ever paid more than 30,000 for electricity. Moreover, it's for the 2 of us with my wife. We have a whole bunch of appliances which are in use regularly. 2 computers running almost all the time when we are at home, large screen TV, a mid sized fridge, front loader washer (uses more power than the cold water top loaders) a bunch of kitchen things used every day, air purifier 24/7 and lights of course. In winter we are using an electric mat on our bed every night. We do not use electric heaters though.
In the summer I used a 1,400W window air conditioner and even with that we didn't use more than 300Kwh. Now I bought a 2,000W A/C so I expect to use a bit more in the summer. In winter we use about 150-180 Kwh (between 15,000 - 20,000 Krw) Spring and fall can be as low as 120 Kwh or even less. The absolute minimum we paid was about 8,000Krw.

More details?

Let me guess: You live in an "officetel" and you use electric heat.

Businesses can get cheaper rates for higher use than residential customers. Residences have cheaper rates at low usage levels. Residential customers are supposed to use cheaper alternatives for heat in winter, such as natural gas, so they do not get the business and large organization rates. "Officetels" were supposed to be "offices" and were not meant to be used for housing. Since people have insisted on living in them, they have lost their discounted electric rates but they were set up to use electric heat.

Advice to get cheaper electric rates:

Move out of your "officetel" office building and into a condominium residental building.

well i spoke w/my co-workers and i am using an electric heater but even the one at our work runs about $50 every month

i keep that on all through the night as well as computer or tv

my computer has a 550 W power supply and i blew one of those USA to Korea plug converters because they couldn't transfer the power correctly

i think i will definitely stop using the plug-in heater but the furnace makes so much more noise

i actually brought my custom built desktop from the States and never noticed how loud it is until moving here

if there's any techies, will switching a PSU (Power Supply Unit) help?

any help or tips are appreciated

Keeping an electric space heater on all night? There you go. The computer is not the problem. The TV might be, if it is a CRT, but the space heater is the real culprit. You sleep with the TV on? Odd.

Give up your electric heater for a month and your electric bill will fall below 30k won.

As for your computer, it might be loud because of dust. Korea can get really, really, really dusty and your computer will get overheated and could break. Go get some canned air or go to a computer shop and have them clean it out for you ^.^

i think its gotta be the Heater and the "officetel" as stated above

since turning it off, i've checked regularly and it has been going up about 5-7 per day

if you don't mind, can you tell me what city you live in and an Apt. or different type of housing?
