The guy just got 10 years, in part for hate crimes. Thoughts?

http://abcnews.go.com/US/rutgers-juror-dharun-ravis-words-convcited/story?id=15922681

The new yorker piece is really good, it actually goes into detail about the relationship between the room mates.

I think the hate crime charges are absurd.

I think that's fair to say about all hate crime charges.

I think that they are appropriate if crimes are commited by hate groups. Just like I think Rico is appropiate for the mob. This is something else entirely.

I wouldn't classify it as a hate crime, but he deserves to serve time for his actual crime. Not a whole lot, but enough to teach him (and others) a lesson.

Even though I'm gay, after reading the New Yorker article I thought the charges against Dharun Ravi were absurd. From what I remember about the article, no one actually saw the guy having sex, like it was planned but he didn't follow through with it.

Rhavi's friend, Jason Tam, seems like a real piece of work. Maybe they should split the sentence with that guy as well.

Murdering someone for being gay is no worse than murdering someone for being wealthy, and the law should reflect that. That hate crime legislation exists in the US is just as disgusting as the miscarriage of justice in this story. Hopefully this ruling is overturned and the kid gets the slap on the wrist he deserves.

The problem is that even a slap on the wrist probably gets him deported back to India, a country he hasn't lived in since he was a child and has little to no attachment to at present (which is why he didn't take a plea deal).

He's gonna be a rock star when he goes back. Native English speaking and his family is obviously well off. He could live large.

The guy did a tool thing, but that sentence is way out of wack.

What is the normal sentence for ppl videotaping and distributing sex acts without consent?

According to the articles, no sex act was caught on video.

So then the "crime" was simply distributing a video of the roommate without their permission?

That seems beyond absurd.

No video was taken. He saw a few seconds of streaming video. He twittered about it, he told his freinds to watch when the guy came over to the room again, but no video was streamed the second time.
