I went to the Yeongdeung-po Costco about a month ago to discover that there was no ground beef in stock.

Can anyone confirm whether it's been discontinued, or whether I just hit a bad day?

I wonder what the Costco HQ thought when they noticed that Korean Costcos go through probably 10x the amount of onions at the hotdog stand than other Costcos worldwide.

I find going to Costco in the morning, especially when they first open, to be the best time. As for weekends at night, avoid!

Rule #2 when living in Korea: Never go to Costco on the weekend!

I always thought that the Korean propensity for devouring free samples and making dishes out of condiments would have an adverse affect on Costco Korea's profitability. However, my fiancee used to work for them and she said that the Yangjae Costco is either the most profitable or the highest grossing Costco in the world (I can't remember which). So I guess the members gorging themselves on free onion salad and free samples is a strategy that's working for Costco Smile

Korea has many stores that rank very high in sales versus the rest of the world.

Costco Yangjae is one.
Starbucks is another. I think one of the Starbucks in Korea is the highest grossing one.

The luxury brands (Prada, Chanel, Louis Vuitton) say Korea is one of their best countries in sales. Which is ironic since Korea is also known to have the highest prices of those brands.

The Taco Bell in Itaewon, although hasn't made any lists yet, will probably rank pretty high considering line that is always there. I went there one night and they ran out of ground beef.

Free condiments and onions are probably a drop in the bucket to what they make in profits. Still, I wonder if they get annoyed at all. I go to homeplus and see people, especially teenagers, just there to eat free samples.

Its crazy how much Taco Bell jumped in popularity. The one in Hongdae gets pretty crowded too. Couldn't find a place to sit the last time I was there.

I've been told the highest grossing Starbucks was the one at NYU on West 4th.

I can second that. My sister works for Costco and says that the company always talks about the Yangjae location being the most profitable.

in 3 years, my costco that I go to has looked like that once. Even on the weekends it gets busy, but not like that. I wonder if that video was taken on the day before a big holiday or something.

Hopefuly the new Costco in Yongin will open soon. Yangjae has added a new parking lot, lowering the time it takes to park. Of course, that probably makes it more crowded.

Charlie Munger, Warren Buffet's partner, has even mentioned the Yangjae store when highlighting Costco as a well-run business.
