Hey guys,

So I'm American, and I have recently married a Korean girl here in Korea.
We just received the marriage document (혼인관계증명서) today.

I am in Korea on a tourist visa right now, and I am wondering exactly what I need to do to get an F-6 Visa, because I've heard several different things.

My wife called Korean immigration here and they said we should call an embassy/consulate outside the country...

so...

I called the Korean consulate in Osaka, Japan, and they said I need some form from my embassy proving that we are married.

I've also heard I might have to go back to the U.S. to get the marriage document?

It seems like everyone we call is saying different things.
Is there anyway I can just get the F-6 visa in Korea without having to leave the country?

I don't understand why this process has to be so complicated.

Also, my tourist visa (or my 90 day sojourn period) finishes in about 10 days.

Will I have to leave the country to reset that, or is there anyway to prolong the period since I've just been married here?

I got this from the Hi Korea Immigration Site (it hasn't updated it to include F6 visas, so I'll post the info for what it used to be). It seems that if you got married outside of Korea you have to get the visa outside of Korea, but if you married here, you can apply here. But don't quote me on that, I'm just decoding what's underneath. Good luck!

The document from the U.S embassy proving that the U.S recognizes your marriage is what you're looking for. I don't see how you would have to go outside of Korea to get it since you were married here. I could understand if you had to go to a county office in the states to get a marriage license, but you weren't married there.

I can't help much more than that, I was married in the states, so we just brought our U.S marriage license which allowed us to register our marriage here in Korea no problem.

So, get a job working for uncle Do Hyun's Academy, get an E2 Visa, and then get married. Problem solved. I think that's the easiest way. Will the US government allow you to get married without your spouse applying for a US Visa first? Find out from their the US gov how they will recognize your marriage. Can you get married in a neutral country and get your respective embassies (US or Korean) to recognize it? Best of luck.
